THE WAIKATO RIVER.
Government Declines to Check Levels. A meeting of the Waikato River Board Avaa held on Friday, at which the question of tho different reports by engineers upon tho important point of lowering the river whs considered. It will be remembered that Mr Thompson's report and Mr Kennedy's report did not coincide. Mr Kennedy, consulting engineer to tho Board, reported that it is possible t«> lower the Waikato river below Kaitangata several feet by simply carrying out the recommendations made by him, namely, by finishing the groins already started. At a meeting of the Board a reply was received from the Prime Minister stating that he would not have check surveys made, also that if the Board wanted this done it must be at its own cost. Mr Massey also added that there was no necessity for setting up the commission of engineering experts, giving as his reason that the information obtained by the Government hydrographic survey completely altered tho position upon which the original promise was made. The Board is therefore thrown upon its own resources, and it is expected that in the end the groins will be continued, as recommended bv Mr Kennedy.
