POKENO

MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. Last Wednesday tho Mutual Improvement Society brought their session for this winter to a close, there being a large number of members present. The evening was spent as a magazine evening, the Rev. L. Foulkes being tho editor. A large number of contributions were received from members. The articles were all read and some of them received a good deal of criticism. After the Magazine had been read and criticised, the annual meeting was held, Mr Lippiatt, the retiring president, being in the chair. The following were elected to the various offices for tho incoming year: —President, Rev. L. Foulkes; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Lippiatt, R. Lyons, J. Dean and Mrs J. McTavish, hon. secretary, Mr J. Craig; committee, president, vice-presidents and Messrs G. Lyons, P. Walden, J. Craig R. McKenzie, Miss Grant, Mrs McKenzie and Mrs J. Dean. Mr Lippiatt spoke of the success of the session just endiug and gave the incoming committee a lot of good advice.

Votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies for providing supper, to the outgoing committee. Mr R. Lyons moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president, Mr Lippiatt, for the interest that he had taken in the society, and for the kindly advice and help that he had given to budding orators. FABMERS' SOCIAL.

The fortnightly social of the Farmers' Union social club was held in the hall on Friday evening, and despite a* counter attraction in the form of a circus, was well patronised. The prizes for euchre were won as follows :—Ladies', Miss J. Clark Ist and Miss Spears, 2nd. Messrs P. Walden and E. Pope secured the men's prizes. Mrs J. Graham, assisted by Master A. Graham, provided excellent music. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr G.Haywood. MrS. McCaw had control of the card games as referee.

BIBLE CLASS PICNIC. The Presbyterian Bible class last Wednesday held a very enjoyable picnic at the water falls on the property of Mr Clark. A very good time was spent, playing games etc. While two ladies and a gentleman of the class were crossing a log over a creek, the log broke and the party had a sudden drop into the creek below. Fortunately no one was hurt, though they did get a wetting.

ACCIDENT. On Thursday afternoon Mr J. Craig and Master Fred Vant were coming down the creamery hill, when the backhand broke, letting the shafts down m. to the ground causing them to break, and setting the horses free. Messrs Uraig and Vant were thrown to the ground, but were fortunate not to get hurt, both escaping with a shaking. CLEARING SALE. A clearing sale was held on Thursday, on the property of Mrs Walden. who has sold her farm. Bucklands conducted the sale everything being sold at a fair price. RECOVERING. Mr Harold Larsen, who had been in the Auckland hospital for some time, has returned to Pokeno.
