MILITARY DANCE.
A Patumahoe Function. Not to be outdone by other sections of the community the Mauku division of the F Company arranged to hold a military social on Friday, the 12th inst,, and a highly successful function resulted. Assistance was given by Mr C R. Sheppard, representing the civilians, and Private Cowi>, of the F Company, and by their joint efforts they succeeded in bringng out the largest crowd ever sien at a dance in the Patumahoe Hall. From the pleasant feeling that prevaded all present whether civilians, Territorials or cadets—it is evident that the training scheme is popular here ard no resisters are to be found.
An exhibition of physical drill dv a party of cadets met with marked approval, the pre:ision and accuracy of their movements being almost equal tu the regulars. During the evening Lieutenant Petcell, commanding the cadets, and Area-Sergeant-Major Hatt addressed those present. Sergeant-Major Hatt said although he had charge of the youngest company of the youngest regiment in the British army he had been corgratula'.ed by the commanding officer on their splendid behaviour end military bearing. He was pleased to say that the conduct of the bovs here was excellent, and they had no resisters in the Mauku section. He complimented them for the excellent turnout at this social and the very pl.asant evening they were having. He wished especially to thank Mr Sheppard for his willing assistance and endeavours to make a success of their first social function.
The Patumahoe string band provided the music, which was up to their usual standard of excellence and was greatly appreciated. Messrs Howard and F. Kavanagh, aenr., acted as M.'st'., and had a particularly busy evening, there being over 50 lsdies present. The following items were rendered during the evening Song by Miss D. Howard; recitation, Miss Goldsworthy; soni», "The Sleeping Camp," Mr Davidson; cornet solo, Mr Davidson; song, "The Old Shako," Mr J. Bree; song, comic, Mr S. Cotter; Highland Fling, Mr Stoneax.
The hall was tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens, the supper was good aud a large crowd of dancers were still going strong at 2.30 a.m., at which time the writer departed.
