ROAD WORKS.
Harris Street To The Fore. Anticipating Trouble. At Wedre.day niyht's meeting of the lioicugh Council the foreman recommended the fallowing works be proceeded with:— Harris street, formation. Puni read, formation Ro<*e Hill. Seridon street, formation to Convent Hill. King street, for.tpath tarred and sanded Manukau road, kerb and channel to Harris street. 'lhe foreman added "I beg to point tut that by doing this work row we will get a goud etart ar.d the roa 8 will become mo.e consolidated to receive metal when available" The Mayor said that Harris street had agEin come to the fore. It had been decided at the committee meeting of the Council to appeal to the ratepayers for a further loan to complete Harris street, and thst a public meeting be held to discuss the matter. The reason the meeting had iiut betn hell was that it had been considered advisable to wait till the report on the drainage Echeme was received and take the two matters t'gether. Anyway, the Council had to decide wlat they should do with Harris street. Cr Pcllock BEked how much the earthwork over the whole road would coat? lhe foreman: About £3OO. Cr Pollock: I'll move that we go on with the earthwork at once. The Mayor: It's all right doing the earthwork, but if jou cari't put on metsl it will only become mud. What would the Council do if the ratepayers did not grtnt them a further loan'' They would not have sufficient money to metal the whole road properly. Cr Hurl.y advocated doing the road right thrjugh with metal, if it was only a track. If only half tre road were metalled it would be ro use.
Cr Pollock asked what would be the cost cf a 16 foot track with 6 inch apawh ar.d 6 inches ot metel. The foreman: I can't say. There, is an estimate of the cost of a road 36 feet wide. Cr Hamilton: The cost will be about £l4 a chain.
Cr Bilkey urged that the road should be made properly. If it could not he made right through it s.OJld be started from the Manukau end. It was absurd to start from Jackson's corner aud stop half-way.
Cr Connie reminded the Mayor that it was decided at the committee meeting to wait till the loan was settled before doing anything. The Major: Yes, but it may be months before ycu can get the money. And if the loan is not carried what are you going to do? Cr Crmrie: Until you get the vote of the people ycu can't say what you are gohfe: to do Cr Patterson supported the idea of metalling the road for the whole length.
The motion (to proceed with the earthwork) was then put and carried. Cr Comrie considered it would be a good ilea to get full information from places where tarred macadam or sspnalt reads were used as to what the cost of maintenance had been. In dealing with King street he believed that tarred macadam though the dearest at the start would be the cheapest in the long run, as the saving in maictenar.ee woulJ more than pay interest. He moved, That the clerk obtain information from various towns.
The Mayor: I'll second that; it's an excellent idea. The motion was earned.
It was decided to refer Puni road and Seddon street to the Works Committee with power to act, and that the work on King street and Manukau road be proceeded with. Cr Beatty mentioned the very bad state of the road between Graham's corner and Mcßae's corner on the Ostrich Fatm road. He believed that the Toi rist Department had promised a grant for this road.
Cr Patterson said no grant had ever been made, but be had reason to believe if representations wen mads they might be succsesiul. It was decided ta make application through the member for the district for a grant. The clerk expressed doubt if there was any loan money for this road, and it was decid.d to defer the question of repairs until tfi9 next meeting, ths foreman in the meantime to attend to immediate repairs. It was resolved to call tenders for work on McGuire's road (Booty's correr to Belmont) and Casey's road (Lawrie's corner to Adams' comer). The clerk was asked to report en what loin money was available for Ronse-Reynclds' ar.d the Ostrich Farm road.
