THE MAUNGATAWHIRI RIVER.
Successful Clearing Operations. Reporting upon the clearance ot the Maungatawhiri liver a Pokenu correspondent writes as follows: — "1 have much pleasure in stating that I have noticed a marked improvement aid the work done has proved a complete fucccss, a great benefit being gained Ly the surrounding districts. It is noticeable that the water instead of lying a long time ou the land after a heavy rain, disappears quite a month earlier than before. Such a bent tit cannot fail t3 profit the settlers of the Maungatawhiiri Valley, in which district much ground now continually under water will be made available for pasture, etc. A grant of £3OO has been obtained from the Government for the continuance of this work. When the mirey will be available is nut ytt quite known, but the work on the river, which will extend over two years at least, will be started probably at the end of October. This work, which includes the killing of willows and the clearing of obstructions in Maungata-whi-i rivet, will extend from Waikato river to Mr C. Pope's boundary."
