DISTRICT NEWS.

WAIUKU. FARMERS' UNION. The usual monthly meeting of the Farmers' Union was teld on Friday evening last. Oar new veterinary surgeon, Mr Marqais, is kept very busy both day and flight owing to there being eo much sickness amongst dairy cows. IMPROVEMENTS. Another old land mark has disappeared from the main street in the removal of the eld premises form-rly knonn as Mitchell's shap, to make room for an op-to-date butchery for Mr H. Barnahy. Mr Edmund Mahorey has plans out for this building and work will te comm need soon. NEW POST OFFICE SITE. After the plans being out and tenders called for the new post office on the present site, word has now corns from Wellington that a mistake was made, ar.d other plans will have to be prepared for the new site, which the Government has purchased next the Methodist Church. THE EPIDEMIC. It is reported that several families are affected with chicken-pox in this district. THE HUNT CLUB The Pakuranga Hunt Club meet on Thursday. VETERINARY SOCIETY. The first general meeting of guarantors of the Waiuku Veterinary Society was held in the Parish Hall, Waiuko, on Friday afternoon. There were between 30 and 40 present. Mr C. Hodgkinson was in the chair. The secretary read th<J report of the provisional committee leading up from when they were appointed to the formation of the society and the engagement of a veterinary surgeon. It had bem found necessary to have the society registered, and ttiis matter ia now almost complete! The report stated that Mr Marqais, M.R.C.V.S., of Timaru, a gentleman with qualifications as well as practical experience, had been engaged as veterinary surgeon. After a fair amount of discussion the report was unanimously adopted. The elactkn of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr S. P. Henry: secretary and treasurer. Mr W. L. West; committee, Messrs J. T. Jones, J. Louden, H. O, Mellsop, S. N. West, A. M. Barriball, A. Hull and C. Hodgkinson; auditor, Mr Aimitsge. The remuneration of the secretary and treasurer was fixed at £l2 per annum. It was decided to make the first quarter's call on guarantors, and to get a limited supply of rules, to be sold to members at cost price.

GLENBROOK. CONCERT AND DANCE. The conceit and dance, in aid of the building fund, and to open the new additions to the hall, was held on August 14th and proved a great success. The • hall was well filled, people coming from as far as Waiuku, Otaua, Aka Aka and Auckland. Mr J. D. Chalmers occupied the chair, and in his remarks informed the audience that the cost of the additions was £SO and of the three-quarters of an acre of land £2O. The programme wa9 a varied one of songs, recitations, etc., and the number of encores proved tha f . it was appreciated. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed items:-Mrs E. Dromgool, Mi«seE Cooper, Watera and Verrvl, Messrs Claud Motion, B. Chalmers, J. Dromgool, (j. O'Hara, F. Loder, U. End E. Cooper and Father Skinner. After the concert, refreshments were handed round by the ladies of the district, ar.d they certainly deserve thanks for the ample and varied assortment. Dancing was kept going till the early hours, ar.d the evening's enjoyment was voted first-class.

BOMBAY. TENNIS EUCHRE PARTY. The fortnightly tennis euchre party was held in the Bombay Hall on Friday night, 15th August. There was a very good attendacce, the chief prizes falling to Miss E. Sbanahan and Mr W. U'Neil, the minor prizes to Miss McCowen and Mr Webster. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The School Committee heid their ordinary meeting in the school on Saturday, August 16th; presentMessrs W. K. Cornthwaite (chairman), W. R. WatfOD, A. French, R. Donovan, G. Common, G. T. Proude and S. Allison. A letter was received irom the Education Board staling that the Minister had sanctioned the sale of the unused education reserve on Razorback, and that Messrs A. Buckland and Sons would sell it by auction at an early date. The Committee granted £'i towards the School library, and £2 tor School garden, tola, seeds and manures, » PUKEKOHE EAST. PUBLIC HALL SHAREHOLDERS. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Pukekohe East public hall was held jon Friday evening. The balance sheet, showing the income for the year £l6 Os Bd, expenses £ll 9s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £1 lis sd, was adopted. The following committee was elected:—Mesfts C. Lausr (chairman), W. Eastcn and L. Morgan (hon. secretary)

POKENO UP-TO-DATE. Mr J;is. Brown has purchased a motor-car, and intends to carry passengers and the mail to Mauugatawhiri, also to make trips to Maramarua, Miranda, and Ilanraki Plains. LAND SALES. Mr H. G. Harris has bought a farm at Buckland. ILLNESS. It is with regret that I have to report the illness of Mrs T. G. Evism. Mrs Evkou underwent an operaticn in Auckland last week, and her many frienas will be pleased to hear that she is well on the mad to recovery. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. Last Wed:esday evening the Mutual Improvement Society met in the Schocl. The niaht was wet and stormy, but still a fair number of members were present, a few coming all the way from Maungatawhiri Valley. Th 3 Rev. L. Foulkes gsve a very interesting address on "The Sea and Ships." Mr Foulkes gave a description of fish and plant lif3 and some very interesting information on shifa. At the conclusion of the address the lady members provided supper. Mr Lippiatt, president, occupied tha chair. FARMEKS' UNION SOCIAL. On Thursday evening the Farmers' Union Serial Club held their usual fortnightly social, when the large number present spent a very enjoyable time. The priza winners were Miss O'Leary and Miss L. Bate?. The gentlemen who won p-iz':S were Messrs J. C. Graham and Steele. Mrs J. Graham, assisted by Master A. Graham, had charge of the musical portion of the programme, and it was all that could be desirer 1 .

DRURY. INTERESTING WEDDING. A very interesting wedding took place at Drury on Tuesday, August 19th. The contracting parties were Mr Peter Cochrane and Miss Myrtle Haliday, both ot Karaka. The ceremony was performed in the Drury fresbyterian Church, which was crowded with interested relatives and friends. The Rev. Madill was the officiating clergyman, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. Haliday. The bride koked charming in a taffeta silk dress. The bridesmaids were Miss Pegler, Mias Ruby Andrews and Miss Ruby Haliday, the bride's youngest sißter, and they locked very pretty in dresses of taffeta voile.

After the wedding ceremony the company adjourned ti the Drury public hall, where a sumptuous wedding breakfast was partaken of, which was served in Mr Rugg's best style. About sixty guests sat down to the breakfast and four generations of the bride's people were represented around the tables. Hei paternal grandparents, who are over 80 years of age, were ptcsent, and her grandfather made a felicitous speech congratulatirg the newly-wedded pair. After the toast of "The King" had been du!y honoured the Rev. Madill, in a few happy sentences, proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom which wa3 feelingly reeprnded to by the bridegroom. The toast was most enthusiastically received. Mr Harry tridegroom's brother, who was best man, propo-ed the health of the bridesmaids, Mr Jos. Flanagan responding in a characteristic speech. Mr Batty proposed the health of the bride's parents, acd Mr - Haliday neatly reponded. The wedding presents were both numerous and useful, and showed the great respect and esteem in which the ard her people are held in the neighbourhood. Music and games were indulged in during the afternoon, and on parting the usual showers of rice were bestowed on the happy couple by their frieuds.

HUNUA.

SCHOOL CONCERT. A very successful concert, was held in the Hunua Hall en Friday evening io aid of the local schcol funds, Mr E. MtConnel, chairman of the committee, occupied the chair. The residents attended in large numbers, and were well rewarded with a capital programme. Ihe school children's items were all encored. The remainder of the items were given by locil talent. The main feature of the evening was the maypole dance, given by ei»ht pupils. A hearty vote of thanks was given to Mrs U. Stokes and Mr Fox for the excellent way they had trained the children. At "the close of the concert a dance was held, Mr H. McConnel supplying the music free. The school funds will be greatly beneiited. FARMERS' UNION.

The monthly meeting of the Hunua Farmers' Union was held in the hall on Saturday evening, when there was a large number of members present. Mr Lockwood (president) occupied the chair. Correspondence was read from the Bombay Union, stating that in their opinion the time wa9 inepDorture for visiting the Government farm. At the close of the general business Mr Lockwood read a very interesting paper on "Fodder Crops." After a sho:t discussion Mr Lockwood was accorded a very hearty voie of thanks. The next meeting is to be held "on Saturday, September l.'ltli, when the subject fcr.discussion is "IntenseX'ultivation versus Grasses " KAIN AND ROAD WORK.

There has been a good deal of rain durirg this last fortnight, and the roads are getting cut up. There is a gang of men wurkirg on the road, at the Hur.ua end, grarlirg. This work, when finished, will be a great improvement.
