Mr A. J. C. Glaa3 writes to the Editor aa fclljws :

Sir,—A great many inquiries have been made re th» planting of Waikato-Waiiiku sandhill?, a commencement of which was premised by the Prime Minister to start this spring. Also, re the report as to the correctness of the levels taken by the Waikato River Board to Mercer. The survey camp has been working above Mercer putting in peg?, etc., for some time, and tin ratepayers want to know where the report i?. Fleesa find space for enclosed letter, which explains the questions fully.—l am, etc., ARTHUR J. C, GLASS.

Ihe letter above referrel to was written by the Prima Minister t3 Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan, as follows: •

"Sir,—With regard to the letter which you received from Mr Glass, chairman of tha Waikato River Hoard, under date ct iha 14th ult., in which he complains that he has received no reply to his previous communication regarding the planting of marram grass on the sandhills at the mouth of the Waikato river, 1 find upon enquiry that en answer was sent to Mr Glass under date cf 13th May, in reply to his letter of 22nd April. "The position is that there are no feme's available for this work at present, (hs votes appearing on last year's appropriations having already been allocated ti certain sandplanting operations at the mouth of the Rangitikei river, and north of Auckland. The Department is experiencing great difficulty in obtaining marram grass, the prices asked being from £5 to £2O per ton on the trucks, rendering it almoht prohibitive to plant to any great extent. A report is being obtained from the land drainage engineer on the matter.

"In regard to the taking ot levels f r om the mouth ot the Waikato river to Mercer, these have not yet been received from the land drainage engineer, and, I presume, have not yet been completed. He has again heen instructed to furnish the report as early as possible.—l am, etc., W. F. MASSEY."
