AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Fortnightly Meeting. There were present at Wednesday night's meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council:—The Mayor (Mr C. K, Lawrie), Crs Cormie, Hamilton, Hurley, Patterson, Pollock, Bilkey, Abbott and Beatty. FIRE BRIGADE SHED. It was decided to allow the Fire Brigade to shift their shed to the back of the Borough Council Chambers, DUMPING GROUND. Tte report of the Sanitation Committee, that a disused watercourse at the bottom of Cape Hill be ussd as a dumping ground for rubbish, was adopted. A GRIEVANCE. Mr B. Foy. waited on the Council to voice a grievance that water running down Domain Hill waj overflowing on to his lar.d. —Referred to the foreman to attend to. KING STREET. Cr Abbott: May I ask for a report on King street? Cr Pollock: 1 have the particulars here in my note book, It was decided to hold over the report until next meeting. A POUND. Cr Bilkey reported that the Committee had pegged out the sit 3 . It would cost ahout £56. The work was to be carried cut by day labour. A METAL CONTRACT. Mr J. Ferguson wro'.e to the Council as follows: —"I am writing to ask if you would relieve me from my contract for metal in Mr Barter's quarry as it now stands, as tinder existing arrangements the broken metal is to be dumped on quarry site, which would entail considerable expense in shovelling. I would suggest that th? spawls be carted on to the roadside and crushed and metal delivered into drays from crusher; and, as I understand you will require 150 ft yards or more in that part of the district, would you call tenders for spawling the larger lot and carting on to roadside? I will undertake to make good to the Council anything that spawling 1 he first 500 yards should cost over and above 3s 4d per yard contract, to be based on prica per yard paid to spawling contractor. And I will crush metal on roadside and pay royalties for 3s 8d per yard, provided that spawls ar2 placid in two rows ten feet apart, in convenient places, and small stones placed in separate heaps bv themselves. Cr Pollock thought they shsuld take Mr Ferguson at hi? wrrd to pay the cost above 3s 4d for spawling. Cr Hamilton held that if a contractor took a contract he should go throagh with it, L'r Poll.ck moved, That Mr Ferguson be released from his contract oi condition that he pay the difference in the cost of the spawling above 3s 4d. Cr Bilkey seconded the amendment. After an irregular and lengthy discussion, the Mayor withdrew his motion and the amendment was carried. FUTURE CONTRACTS. It. wa3 resolved that all future contracts be legally drawn up, and a time limit imposed, and a deposit paid before being accepted. ABOUT A LAKE. Douglas Bro3. complained of the bad Etite of the road leading past their property, and that all the water from the top side of the road flowed on to their property, causing considerable damage. "We «ould like the Council to give the matter careful consideration," was the conclusion of the letter. "There is a lake on this road," gaid Cr Pollock: "but they ao not want it bridged." They want a drain to take away the vvater whi:h does rot run into the fake. Cr Comrie said if the Council formed the road and put the water into the "pond" the Council would want an indemnity ir the water overflowed cn to applicants' property. At parent the road was not formed. To carry the water away Jrom this be an expensive process. It waa decided to authorise Cr Pollock to attend to this work, the cost not to exceed £7, provided Douglas Bros, gave the Council an indemnity against any claim for water going on to their property from "the lake." DRAINAGE. The District Engir.e:r of Railways wrote:—"l have the honour to acknowl.dge receipt of yoars of 4th inst., and in reply beg to inform you that tha Department is nai in favour of having any class of pipe run along the railway line in or near the formation, but if you forward plan and section showing size ot pipe, graie and location accurately, I will submit application to the Chief Engineer, Wellington." Decided to inform him that the plana will be forwarded him as scon as their engineer had prepared them. AN APPROACH WANTED. The Pukekohe Milk Supply Company applied to the Council to have a suitable approach provided to their new factory cn the Puni road.—Decided to provide them with scoria at cost price. THE EXHIBITION CUURT. Auditor General wrote stating that the audit office would offer ru objection to the Borough contributing to the cost of a Court at the Auckland Exhibition, provided such contribution does not involve a breach of the limit of expenditure imposed.— Received. DOMAIN FUNDS. The Under-Secretary, Department of Lands, wrote stating that Mr R. F. Webster hsd asked him to hand over £3O 4s Id, credit balance of the old Pukekohe Domain Board, to the Borough Council for expenditure on the domain. PERMANENT LEVELS. The clerk stated he had seen the borough solicitors on the matter of securing exemption. They adviced the Council to write ar.d find cut, but had very grave doubts if it could be granted. After a short discussion it was decided to apply for an extension of ' time in which to take the levels.
