FARMERS' UNION.
The Buckland Branch. The monthly meeting of the Buckland branch of the Farmers' Union was held in tlie Public Hall on Saturday evening. The president, Mr J. K. Hamilton, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of member?.
The Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce wrote enclosing copy of resolution recently pa-sad by them, urging the Government to at once take steps in the direction of hnving soma alteration made in conditions now existing at level crossings.— The meeting unanimously decided to support the resolution, and the secretary was instructed to communicate with the Prima Minister a.d the member for the district respecting the matter.
A letter wai received from the Minister for Railways, acknowledging the branch's letter conveyng resolution carried at their last mseting, which requested that a reduction be made in the fares charged between Buckland and Pukekohe stations, the existing Eecond-class return fare being BcJ, and the distance between the two etations being under t*o miles. Ihe Minister's reply, which stated that the Department was unable to comply with the branch's request, forth much caustic comment. Members characterised the charges aa being exhorbitant, and it was unanimously resolved to bring trie matter under the notice of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce, and the Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union, with a request that both bodies support the Buckland branch of the Union in having, a reduction effected.
A letter was received from the Provincial Secretary drawing the branch's attention to the movement which the Auckland Executive has cn foot, of establishing a Co-opera-tiva Egg and Foullrv Association, in connection with the Union, and asking that a delegate be appointed to attend a conference which is to be held in Auckland to further consider the matter.—lt was agreed to reply regretting that no delegate was available to attend the conference, but that the branch gave the project its hearty support. The secretary was instructed to communicate with Mr Lyons, Government veterinary surgeon. with a view to ascertaining if thai gentleman could make it convenient to visit Bucklar:d for the purpose of givirg a practical demonstration in the diEeJses of stock. In the event of his being able to comply with the request, Mr Ljor;s was asked to appoint the date of hia visit to the district.
The secretary reported that the social recently held under the auspices of the branch had been of a most successful nature, both financially and otherwise. It was agreed to hold a progressive euchre tournament and social in the Public Hall shortly, and a <ufccommittee was aet up to make the necessary arrangements. Regret was expressed at the dcpartura from the district of Mr George Watson, who has been a consistent ( supporter of the Union and [branch,* and a motion to that effect was carried.
