THE NEW SPEAKER.

The appointment of Mr F. W. Lang, member for Manukau, to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in succession to the late Sir Arthur Guinness, appeared to us to be a foregone conclusion. It one runs over the list of Parliamentary members the mind 13 not often arrested by reading th& name of one who appears to have those singular qualifications of knowedge, dignity and culture which we are wont to associate with the occupant uf the Speaker's chair. In these respects Mr Lang is not altogether conspicuous, but his abilities for the position are well above the average of prcsent-dav members. It is singular how the political wheel brings its charges as it revolves, fc'oma twenty years ago, two candidates wooing the electors with vigour made the acquaintance of each other in the village of Papakura. They both tasted defeat in their respective constituencits. Subsequently fcothef them gained places in Parliament. To-day, after twenty years of political and personal friendship, one of those candidates (the Han. Mr Massey) is Prime Minister, while the other (the Hon. F. W. Lang) is the Speaker of the House. To the hearty congratulations which we have already extended to Mr Massey, we tow add our sincere good wish:a to Mr Lang upon his preferment.
