KARAKA ROAD BOARD.
Monthly Meeting.
The above meeting wgs held on Saturday. Present: The Chairman (Mr J. Batty), Messrs J. Schlaepfer, G. dutton, R. J. -Johnston and the clerk (Mr H. Gasson). WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? Mr Johnston mentioned that clumps of fuize were blocking the culverts opposile McPherson's. He did not know whether the Railway Department or Mr Ingram was responsible for the clearing. The Chairman aaid he would see the Railway Engineer about the matter and ascertain who was responsible. RUNCIMAN POST OFFICE. The Chairman reported that he had seen the ganger regarding the metalling of the road in front of the Runciman post office, The eanger had put in representations to the Department, and il in a few days there was no result the Chairman would interview the engineer. RUNCIMAN TOWNSHIP. The Chairman reported that he had been approached regarding the by-rcads in Runciman township, Mrs Stevenson had bought some eections, and she wanted one of the roads to be ploughed and formed. Mr Johnston thought there was more necessary work to be done. The Chairman pointed out that there was not the money available to do this work, even if the Board were willing. HINGAI-GLASSON CREEKS. The Chairman said that a design for the bridges across £he Hingai and Glascon creeks would, in accordance with the wishes of the meeting of ratepayers held seme time ago, be shortly presented. When this was received the Board would have to take steps to have the different bodies sffected cited. A special meeting of the Board would be called to discuss the matter. YATES' CUTTING. Some months ago the Board decided to have work done on a cutting, familiarly known as Yates' Cutting. A letter was received by the Chairman that the work was unsatisfactory and the cutting was in a dangerous state. The Chairman disagreed with this view, but admitted the road was not as good as it might be. Be had therefore instructed Comrie to attend to the cutting.— Action confirmed. A NEW ROAD. The Chairman mentioned that the road through the Karaka Land Company's property to the Government block, hitherto unused, would on account of the Kardka Company's land being sold come into use. He suggested that the surfaceman be instructed to work on this road when not able to work elsewhere. He was willing to put a man on at his own expense to work with the surfaceman. On the motion of Mr Sutton, seconded by Mr Schlaepfer, it was decided that the Chairman be allowed the use of the Board's team for a fortnight.
MAIN XOAD BKIDGES. The Chairman reported cn ihe result of the Board's interview with the County Council regarding the repairing and renewing cf the bridges on the main roads. The Council had said they would apply to the Government for a grant. Mr Sutton: That'll take a year. Mr Johnston: If it's got to come out of the Government it will take & while. Mr Sutton: I thought the Council would be generous. The Chairman: I won't say they are not generous, but I will say they are cautious. He reminded members that if a plank or two wanted putting in the Board would do it, and if they knew of cases where minor repairs were required members should report the case. NEW PAERATA ROAD. It was decided to ask the Government if the grant of £IOO, placed on the Estimates for the new read to Paerata, was still available, and if it cad lapsed that the Government be requested to reinstate it on this year's Estimates. ROAD REPAIRS. The Clerk stated that there were some very bad places along the road leading to Clark's by Carpenter's property, one spot being absolutely dangerous. It required about one to two chains cutting and a culvert, It was decided to have the work recommended done. THE "BEST OF NEWS." A letter was received from the Advances Department intimating that the application from the Hoard for the £6OO loan had been sanctioned and forwarding debentures and papers for signature. Chorus: Hurrah! The Chairman was authorised to sign the debentures. TRANSFER. A transfer on the roll was made from W. Hussey to A. Anderson. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £64 18s 4d were passed for payment.
