What Will The Government Do? The Motorists Concerned. The position regarding (he Main South road stili rcmaius confused. At a recent me ting of the Franklin County Council, Cr Flanagan mentioned that the Prime Minister had promised £ of £ subsidy, on grants rr.aip by local todies and by the Autormnile .Association. In view of this alleged promise the Council decided to ask the various toad hoards concerned to rrake contributions. and they responded readily. But since then Mr Massey has declared that ha did r.ot say exactly wfcat was reported. Subsequently, too, the Automobile Association declared itself agai st giving grants. Ibe matter again came up for considera'ion at a meeting of the Auckland Automobile Association on Tuesday evening, whtn a letter was ma from the Minister for Public Works stating that while the Government. was prepared to subsidise any voluntary subscriptions made for the purpose of permanently improving the road, it waa notptepared to make a*iy grants for the maintenance of tha Great South na', as such work was properly the function of ths local bodies interested. The Association decided to again communicate with tha local bodies on the matter.
