THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS

"We nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice."

To-morrow tha burgesses of the borough of Pukekohe will be called upoti to elect their Council representatives for the cnauirtg term of two years. For tha eight seats vacant there are twelv2 candidates, and we think the borough is to be congratulated upna trie coming forward of so many desirable public men, who are prepared to give their services to the peopla. Twelve mnnt!i3 a?o the voting for the first Council for Pukekohe resulted as follows: Hamilton, D. R. 317 Lawrie, C. K. 295 Bilkey, R. 293 Pollock, J, 280 Hatt, J. J. 245 Berriman, A. 245 Comrie, J. A. ?24 Johns, J. VV. 214 The foregoing wera ekcUd. The unsuccessful candidates were: Hurley, T. B. 20G Dell, H. 200 Potter, J. 190 Andrew, B. H, 16d Mason, H. G K. 145 Wright, C. M. 130 Jackson, F. 107 Of the original Councillors now retiring only hve are standing for reelection. These are:— Johns, J. W. Lomri?, J. A. Poilack, J. Bilkey. R. Hamilton, D. R. We have special opportunities of watching the work of the Councillors and may say without any hesitation that each of the above-named Councillors has fullv justified hij teat and merits re-election at the hands of the ratepayers. The experience of the past year will the better qualify them for the solqtion of the problems which still face tie Council, and we believe that the voters will act in the best interests of the borougn by returning all of them fur another term of office. It will be a moie difficult matter to select the most suitable three of the seven remaining candidates who offer themselves. In alphabetical order these are—Messrs W. G. Abbott, J. Beatty, J. Cost:llo, H. Dell, T. B. Hurley, H. U. R. Mason and J. Patterson. In such societies as he has identified himself with since coming to Pukekohe, Mr Abbott has proved himself a vigorous force, and since he is settling upon the land he would doubtless te able to render ths borough capable tervice, untrEmmelled by business considerations. Kr Beatty, so far as we know, is untried in public life. Both Messrs Costello and Dell have had experier.es as members of the old Town Board, and they were two of the most aiert and vigorous members of that body. Mr Hurley and Mr Mason are both well and favourably known. Mr Mason has one ideal—a healthy, water-flushed Pukekohe—ar.d we always welcome a man with a public objective even if at the time we may not be able to acknowledge its practicability. Per reasons that will readily suggest themselves we feel much diffidence in commenting upon Mr Patterson's candidature, ar.d therefore we will sav nothing. In the final analysis we confes3 ourselves at a luss how to choose. We want to Eee a policy of progress and not a programme of re-action. And in the individual judgments at the ballot box, when it comes (as it will to many people) to filling the three seats from the seven candidates, the peisjnal equation will doubtless te the determining factor.
