THE WAIUKU RAILWAY.
Where Will The Junction Be? What Mr Massey Says. It is well-known that the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce is urging ihat a survey of the proposer! Waiuku iailway should be made to Puk - k he. The* have receive! a reply rrom ib t on. Mr M.ssey on the subject and wi m commendable openness the Presuii nt and Stcretary tave sanctioned the publication o! Mr Massey's letter. The Piim; Mil iater, under date 28 h March, writes:— "In reply to your letter oi the I,7th in t , with regard te ihe route of tho proposed Waiuku-Patumahoe branch rajiway line, I have to say that th 1 inductions to the engir.etra —who, I Understand, are at present on the spot—are to take the line where it «ill be of the most bervice to tha Jftblic. I ought however, to call yourattent on to the fact that by Act of Parliament the line must go through .or near Patumah e. This is the only fixed coidition in connection with the pi'ODosal and as it is statutory it canpot possibly be departed fri.m. Wh6re the branch line will join the main line is an open q iettio., which will probably not he kettled for seme little time to come. I can quite understand ihat a junction at Pukekohe has much to recommend it, as the town has now b coma nne of considerable importance, ard large stock tales ate held there, Jam submitting youi representations to the Public Works Depaitment, put I may say at once that I do not iatend to bring any influence to- bear i. favour of any pa-ticular route. The money for construction purposes will have 'o be feund by the country as a whole, and I Rant to see the line which will serve the country best."
