WAIPIPI: EAST END.
SHCOL PI CMC. On Thursday, January 23rd, the school children'o annual picnic took place in Mt Jones' paddock. Wharf road, kindly lent for the occasion. The weather was all that could be desired, the sun's rajs beirg tempered with a southerly oreeze During the afterroon between 1-jI) ard 200 persona w<.re present from Waipipi, Waiuku and Kohe Kchs. The committee had made arrangements to s:ipp!y net water, and a few minuses utter 12, noon, the whole line ot fortificat ons was in operation, tie eiumy being the lumh hampers, which were soon pjt out of action. During the afternoon races, games and lollie scrambles were the order of the day, everybody seeming happy and at home, and at peace with'the world. The tide being in made it more pleasant still. At the finish of the lira! event rousing cheers were given to Mr Jones for the use of the paddock and a cheer to Mr J. Mcuwen for his waggon from Kohe Kohe.
The races -vere fast and furious, non-winners having anjther go for more prizes, which panned cut tfiat every boy and girl received a money prize. While giving the young a spell, and the old a chat and a smoke, an adjourned meeting of the Sports Committee was held when it was decided to hold the Waipipi sports on the 17th March, in Mr W. Jones' paddock kindly given for the occasion. To wind up the picnic a social was held in the evening in the school house, and was a success in every way. The ladies kindly helped with the supper. Mr M. Harvey officiated as M.C. and Mr R. Hewit as musician, both being in good form. The following are the results of the races:— Boys, 12 to 14—C. Gillot 1, P. Avlward 2, W. Short 3. Girls, 12 to 14—M. Snort 1, G. Adam. 2, A. Kimterly 2. Boys, 9to 12— S. Harvey 1, A. Jackson 2, P. Clark 3. Girls, 9 to 12— J. Gleeson 1, B. Walsh 2, C. Aylwaid 3. Late comers' race —H. O'Brien 1, C. Irvin 2, K. Adams o. Married Ladies —Mrs Woodward, scr, 1; Mrs Hewit, scr, 2; Mrs f urniss, 3yds, 3 The other ladies were Mrs ChipliD, Mrs Walsh, Mrs Cotter, Mi - 3 A>lward, Mrs Irver?. Men's Race, open sweepstake—N. Cottar 1, J. Short 2. Men, 40 and ever—J. McDonald 1, W. McCarthy. W. Watson, F. Harvey dead heat for second place. In the iun off, McCarthy 1, Harvey 2. A ding-dong race, every m«n going right out. The nsxt race took place cn the milk stools, and it was fairly fait!
