DISTRICT NEWS.
BOMBAY. MAIL t'.ONTRACfT. Mr Jacob H. Carter, who now haß the mail contract from Drury to Bombay is well-known throughout the district, he having preivously pat in many years at the work. To cope with pwsent day requirements Mr tarter has jußt bought a new 'bus capable of carrying 14 passengers and a four-horse waggonette which bolda 20. This 'bus is a modern one with glass windows, built on an easy running style. As well as these two new vehicles Mr Carter has two other large waggonettes and several buggies and sulkiej. Some splendid horses have been nought and Mr Carter is lookice out for moie, and intends only to drive reliable teams. The late proprietor's driver has been secured, and the coach continues to start from the post office as usual. Mr Carter and his father are both expert blacksmiths, ho all repairs and shoeing can be done at their own shop. Mr Carter, senr., is one of the old school and his work is ol the very best. He told the writer that he was the first man tu make a set of chain harrows in New Zealand; this was 42 years ago, and the implement is stil' in uce and doing good work. Mr Carter, senr., has been in Bombay for the past 37 years His house is built on the spot where the redoubt stood on Williamson's Clearing, at the time of the Maori war, and which now the .fertile Bombay Valley.
