PUBLIC LIBRARY.

Should the Borough Take it Ovep? There wes only a small attendance at Thursday's meeting of subscribers to the Pukekohe West Public Library. Mr A. B. Barter presided. On Rev. F. B. Dobson's motion it was decided to sell the piano, for which an offer had been received, and the trustees were also authorised to sell the bagatelle table. Rev. Dobson point 2d out that the matter had been fully advertised, and nobody had any grounds for objecting. A discussion ensued about the need for making better proviiion for the public reading ruom. Mr Barter said this brought them to the question of approching the Borough Council about taking over the Library. Of course, if the Council did so they would be required to provide a public reading room. Various methodsWre mentioned—such as letting the building for Council Chambers or as sample rooms—whereby the revenue for the Library might be increased, but Mr Barter's idea was that the most satisfactory scheme would be for the Council to take the Library over. Messrs Barter, Townson, and the Rev. Dobson' were appointed a committee to formulate a scheme and wait upon the Council about the matter. Subject to the piano being sold it was decided to repay the loan of £37 10s and interest to Mr R. Bilkey. During the meeting it transpired that only 26 subscribers pay their 10s and carry on right throqgh the year, but with those who take books for brnktn periods the number is 50. It was said that a number uf the Library books weie missing, and it was decided to take stock and call in all outstanding volumes to be checked. Mr Attwood was thanked for the work he did in stock-taking last year. A debt of £3 12s by the Town Band was cancelled, the committee desiring to help that institution as much as possible. Congratulatory speeches were made upon the good work of Rev. F. B. Dobson, who was re-elected secretary and treasurer.
