ONEWHERO BAZAAR.
A Successful Function. This bazaar held last week proved one of the most successful functions ever held in the district. The interest taken was demonstrated by the fact that prizes and donations were besiowed by all the tradespeople in the locality and liberal support given from Tuakau, Pukekohe, and even as far away as Auckland, Tauruaranui and Otaliuhu. The ladies in Onewhero have been constantly busy for the past four months and a great deal of the plain and fancy work came from their hands. In this respect a tremendous amount of work was doue by Mesdames G., J. and W. Logan, Mrs and Misses Crawford, Mesdames A. and J. Cathgart, Mrs and Miss Lewis, Miss Geraghty, Mesdames Attewell, Cole-Baker, McKinney, Cummings, Parsons and Miss and Mios M. McWhirter.
Mr E, Attewell did all in his power as secretary, and had able assistance from Mr Lewiß, who has had considerable experience at these affairs. On Thursday evening a number of competitions took place, the shooting being particularly well patronised. Following are some of the principal events: —
Ladies' Shnoting—Miss Crawford, worked cuohion, 1; Miss Geraghty, pin tray, 2. Men's Shooting—Prizes were won by W. Glasgow and John Cummings. Potato Peeling—Mrs Bark and Miss Geragthy tied for first, so agreed to "peel off," when Mtß Bark won a handsome tea cosy.
Nail Driving, first prize a ladles' companion.—Miss M. McWhirter and Miss B. Lewis tied in this event, and a repeat gave Mibs M. McWhirter first place.
Jam Tart Eating.—Willie Logan
Men's Hat Trimming Competition —J Geraghty 1, and kept the hat as prize.
The stalls were numerous, and a full sbow in all departments was attractively displayed. The Fruit and Lolly Stall in care of Miss K. Crawford, Miss Lewis and Miss M. McrfVhirter contained tasty baskets of confectionery, fruits in season, and a general assortment of soft drinkß and carried on a brisk business. Plain Stall, in charge of Mrs J. Logan and Mrs Lewis, was well stocked with ladies' and children's clothing, from the baby's bib to the matron's dresses.
Fancy Stall contained all classes of fancywork, such as cushions, cosies, ladies' hand bags, dolls, ties, Bhoes, etc., and an assortment of butter and jam dishes, clocks, watches, trays—even to leather bridles and gate hinges. Here good business was transacted by Mrs G. and W. Logan. Tea Rooms. Here really "good" cups of tea and selected cakes and pastry were brought to the customers by attractive waitresses, and a lively time was spent by the Misses Crawfords, Geraghty and McWhirter in attending to the numerous visitors.
Fish Pond.—This was where the children with a bent pin on a string endeavoured to hook the bobbing cork, and all came away with a prize, while a Christmas tree in the centre of the hall held a prize for all ticket holders another delight for the children.
Later. Further particulars of the bazaar are now available. Owing to the number of competitions that had (o be got off the bazaar was continued 011 Monday afternoon and evening, winding up with one of Onewhero'a popular dances. It is estimated that : the receipts from all sources will I total well over £65. This will go a ! long way towards clearing up the debt on the hall. Final competitions arc as follows: — Shooting A, first prize gun cleaninz outfit—Mr John Gufiin. Shooting First prize, English bridle. J. W. Blackmore; first prize, .22 Winchester rifle, W. J. flicks; first prize, one years' subscription to "Weekly News," A. S. Drake; first prize, brief bag, Mr Eyre. Ladies' Nail Driving, first prize Jersey calf presented tiy Mr Logan— Mr o E. A. Parsons. Correct weight ot cake—Mrs E. A. Parsons.
Married v. Single began another match on the Pukekohe cricket field on Saturday. It is to be * two days' match. In the first innings Singles made 177 (Blake 59, Sebofield 41, D. Rouhton 28) and Married made 128 (Dazeley 42, Deane 24, Osborne 20, J. King 20). The second innings is to be played on Saturday next.
