POKENO
TENNIS MATCH. On Boxing Day a very enjoyable tennis match was played on Mr Twining's lawn at Maungtawhiri Valley, between a combined team representing Pokeno and Maungatawhiri Valley and a team from the Mercer Tennis Club. Ihe lawn was in splendid order, and some very good play was witnessed Ihe combined team proved too strong for Mercer team, the Bcores being—PokenoMaungtawhiri 52, Mercer 42. Mrs Twining very kinrly provided a splendid luncheon aid afternoon tea, and spared no effort to make her guests enjoy themselves. At the close of play cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Twining, and they were thanked by members of both teams for the kindness shown to them. 1 understand that a return match •will be played at Mercer at an early date. SOCIAL. ihe close ot the Old Year ar.d the b ginning of the New Year wa» celebrated here by the holding of an enjoyable social, held in the local hall. Visitors were present from far and near, and the dancers made a pretty scene as viewed from the stage. The hall looked very nice, the walls being covered with bamboo and other green foliage, while suspemded irom the ceiling were numerous Chinese lanterns, and the main lighting lamps were nicely draped. Mr led Arnold was responsible for tne and is to be congratulated on his efforts. Some very nice eveniug dre3s s were worn by the ladies. Being a mere man, and a bachelor, your correspondent will not attempt to describe the frocks. The musi c was suplied by Marriage's orchestra, from Auckland, and needless to say it wss first-class. Extras were played by Mrs J. Graham and Mast=r "Bun" Graham. The supper room was in charge of Mr Sid McCaw, and he proved the man in the right place. Mr B. Pc-ndergraat was M.C. for the evening, and he kept things going in a brisk manner. The same gentleman was also secretary, and it is due to him, and the untiring efforts of his commttee, that the social proved such a great success. The following gentlemen comprised the committee:—Messrs Wilson, B. Pendeigrast, J. Muir, T. Arnold and C. Pendergrast. I would suggest to the committee that en the occasion of their next social they try to be a wee bit more punctual in starting, as 9.15 p m. is rather too late to make a start. OLD YEAR OUT. Th 3 New Year passed off quietly here. At midnight on New Year's Eve the church chimes were rung, and that was about all that happened, eacept that a few gates were lifted off their hinges, and a couple of young men were observed trying to harness a gig to an old portable engine.
