TUAKAU.

J TENNIS. Thejreiurn match between BuckiarJTaiicrruakau Tennis Clubs is to be played at • Tnaicau on SaturJay. ACCIDENTS. Some little excitement was caused in George-street on Saturday afternoon by a runaway. A pair of buggy horses were frightened by the pole becoming detached from the buggy and made along George-street at a terrific pace. At (he corner of George and Liverpool-streets the horses collided with a milk cart owred by H. Craig and were brought to a standstill, very little damage being done to either vehicle or horses. The owner of the buggy and pair were Maori visitors. I regret to report an accident which befell Dr H. H. Cbeesman's tarn-out on New Year's Day. While crossing tbe small bridge at Tutman'a cross-in? tbe horse became restiv?, and in tbe trouble that ensued the gig was sent over the side into the creek. Some damage to the vehicle resulted. NEW POST OFFICE. For a very long time we have been agitating for a rew post officr, a public utility which has been sadly needed. The Progressive League has now received word that new plans are being prepared, and the cost of the building will run into about £IOOO. We sincerely hope that the instructions which have been given to expedite the work of erection will be carried out. Some question of the site has been ra>sed, and it is to be desired that all the people of tha district will fight together for the post office first, leaving the issue of the site to be determined, if need be, by the posta' authorities Any rift in the local lute now might result in the erection of the post office itself being delayed indefinitely, which would be a serious blow for the whole place. TOWN BOARD. \ £ome time ago the "Times" had in it an article advocating the establishment of a Town Board for Toakau. I have not heard of any piacttcal steps having been taken since then, and it appears that the preliminary information required—such as the population within tbe required radius, the boundaries to bb- fixed, etc.—is not yet available. In view of the fact that the Pukekohe East Road Board appears to be practically unanimous in favour of merging with the County Council—and it may be presumed that the ratepayers will support the action of the Board members—the people of Tuakau ought now to proceed further in the matter of the Town Board. Under present conditions the township has the advantage of the watchful care of the members of the Board who reside at this end, and the Board as a whole has shown itself sympathetic when it has been demonstrated that the expenditure of money in the towr ship itself has been necessary. But when the district is merged it is feared that Tuakau will not receive anything like such close attention, for the very simple reason that County Councillors will have much wider interests to engage their minds. Our problems of buildings, of surf ace drainage, of sanitation, of street lighting, and so on, will go on accumulating, and the further they proceed without supervision the more difficult to deal with they f will become. For thece reasons the townspeople ought to undertake the control of the township's affairs at the earliest possible moment.
