Borough Finance.
TTO THE EDITOR.] Sir,— Ee Mt Dunns letter that appeared i your p*per pf 20th i st First, Mi Dunn goes on to say there was apppare t reticence and supbeing observed. In reply to the above. 1 consider it is not only bad business, but, in my opinion, it is not business at all to say much about any transactions in hand until same are satiifactorily arranged. Possibly Mr Dunr would have called a publ c meeting and made a big noise, as he is in the habit of doing, and told everybody through the press —including the money-lerde»s—that Pukkohe was in a fix and must have money. The result would have teen that the borough would have suffered through too much publicity, as it has done in the past. Mr Dunn said on the public platform also in Cout.cil, tnat he could get £IO,OOO or more for the borough at 5 per cent, less half per cent, brokerage, etc.; but before re obtained this money his heart failed him and as at least one courcillor says, he "wriggled out." Mr Dunn considered he knew so much about finance that none uf the other councillors considered it was worth while losing any sleep over the matter. But, Sir, as soon as the financial affairs were left in my bauds 1 made it my business to consult Mr Dunn, considering he knew so much about it That gentlemiin informed me that he did not kr.ow if that money he spoke about was still available, also that he did not intend to discuss borough affairs at all. At to the legality of our arrangements, I can assure you everything is done quite openly and under the advice of legal gent 1-men; also that all our mee irga are open to the public and any ratepayer can st any time irspect our books, etc. The report tbat appeared in the paper, referred to by Mr Dunn, with my authority, was generally correct, showing the people that we had been successful in rsieirg all the mor.ey we required at 98 in Pukekobe, ar.d 1 consider the burgesses should be satisfied with the arrangements made, considering the tightness of the moi ey market, and 1 henestly believe everyone is satisfied except Mr Dunn ard perhaps his friends who are looking lor law. In conclusion, I would point out that there will be an election in atout three month?, ard if Mr Dunn and his friends who are looking for trouble will rome out and be elected to the Council they will fit d plenty cf it without leaving the Council table. -1 am, etc , C. K. LAWRIE, Mayor. Pukekohe. December 23rd.
