Cr Johns, on behalf of the Committee, reported that they were still enquiring about sites. They were in teuith with four places, but cculd r.ot get information as to price about Uo 'of tbe properties until the end of the month. The Committee would report later on. THE WATER SUPPLY. Mr Suggate reported having examined tbe plant and found everything in oider. He bad given a certifica e of completion an that the borough engineer cculd now begin to use and take cbarge of the machinery. Ibe amount of water coming from the two bores could only be calculated after going for a long time, but that morning he had found that about 8000 gallons an hour were being lifted. Ihe Mayor said it was satisfactory to know that the supply wa 3 all right;, he had visited the power house that day and everything appeared to be all right, with plenty of water. MISCELLANEOUS. Ihe Mayor reported that lha debentures would be ready by Saturday or Monday. The water engineer said that as not Eufficient water was available, and in view of certain difficulties, he thought it advisable to hold over the Fie Brigade's wet practise unt 1 a future date. Building permits were granted for the erection of a four-roomed cottage for Mr Boase, and for additions to Mr Andrew's house in Edin-burgh-street. THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. lwo favourable responses were received in answer to the request for support in the (ocncil's endeavour to have the proposed Agricultural College established here. F. J. Wcotten, clerk of the Papatata Road Board, wrote savin* that his Board would support Pukekote's claims for the establishment of the Agricultural College in this district S. Fielding; clerk to tbe [Dru y Road Board, wiote:—"This Boaid is quite in sympathy with your Council in tbe matter, and will co oparate in any way in their power." Cr Hamilton said he understood that the Ch;mber of Comimrce wan convening a meeting of the local bodies concerned to fully discuss the matter. COUNTY AND BOROUGH. The borough solicitors advised that the County Council couU not be compelled to contribute to the upkeep of main roads h the borough. The Clerk was instructed to enquire from other toroughs as to their assessment of inability for through traffic. DAMAGE BY WATER. The borough solicitors (Endean and Holloway) wrote: "We beg to advise you that all damage to property caused by the Fire Inspector, or persons under his orders ii due execution of their duties, shall be dtemed to be damaged by fire, and in tbe event of such property not being covered or inly partly covered by insurance, then the Council shall be liable to pay compensation for such damage to be determined by arbitration. If damages aie assessed at £SOOO then the Council will have to arrange a loan to meet same." Councillors thought this responsibility was a very severe one for boroughs to carry, but, as they said, they could not alter the Act, and the matter was permitted to stand in abeyance. Nobody present had beard of any borough having been saddled with liability in this connection.
