DISTRICT NEWS. [From Our Own Correspondents]. (Continued from page 1.) PAPAKURA. Tennis Club Dance.

A most enjoyable dance was given in the Public Hall on Friday, October 11th, by the members of the Papakura Tennis Club. The weather j proved all tiat could be desired, J and we were glid to see present ao many visitois from the surrounding clubs The secretary, Mr Earl, and the committee deserve great credit for their efforts to promote the enjoyment of their guests. The hall was prettily decorated with flags and rikau palms, the work of the energetic members i f the club, two of whom, Messrs J. Walker and F. Barker, went to a great; deal of trouble in having to go some distance to thj bu3h for the greenery. Mrs Wood and Mis 3 Cave artistically decorated the s pper table, in the adjoining hall, with a miniature tennis court in the centre, surrounded by a hank of moss, studded with white flowers, the while eft\ct being very pretty. Thj success of the evening was largely due to the effiiier.t way in which Mr von Sturmer carried out his duties as M.C. Mr D. W. Jones was also to have acted as M.C., but the committee were sorry to hear that owing to illness he was unable to attend. Mrs H. Walters and Miss liarl kindly provided the music Amongst those present were Mrs Rolktt, wearing black voile, rich cream lace scarf; Mm Wynn-Williams, rich black silk; Mis Lock wool, black relieved with cream; Mrs Moody, black; Mrs von Sturmer, pretty pink and white voile; Mrs S McCallough, grey relieved with white; Mrs H. The handsome block of three shops and boardinghuuse, erected by Mr Richardson, is now finished, and is a great improvement to the township. I hsar that Mr Keddaway, having sold out his business at Patumahee, is taking two sheps and the boardinghouse. One shop will be used as a tobacconist, fancy goods and hairdressing establishment; the other will be a fruit shop with soft drinks and tearooms. As the township has none of these businesses, we anticipate a good run for Mr tieddaway, and wish him every success. \ Town Board. A "number of ratepayers frim Elliott Street and Wood Street waited on the Town Board on Menday re the dangerous state of steep banks on footpaths for foot traffic on dark nights, Elliott Street is one of four cross roads opposite Willis Bros.' store, in ths centre of the township. Th 3 stre't is a disgrace to the To»n Board. Mr Richardson, a member of the Board, speke in favour of the work being done, and said the fence in Village Gieen should coma down to the level of the footpath w ir ake a goud job M it. He moved a resolution to that effect, and promised to give 2s Gd in the £ if it were done that way. Mr C. U. Smith seconded the resolution. Mr Willis, chairman, moved an amendment, that the top eid of Elliott Street, near South road, remain as it is and the Board to see the fence on Village Green. Mr D. btewart seconded. Mr tiichardaon explained that to leave tha fence where it is the bank would crumble away; the fence would fall down in twelve months and they wrul«i hse his 2s (jd in the £. Mr (J. IJ. Smith said as Mr Wilson was to be there on Tut s iay to report on water supply fo- the tuwn, they should get him to s>.e the fence and report on it. He thought Mr i Richardson should leave the fence j out of his resolution, which was agreed to. The resolution was then put and carried. The deputation left very much nleased to know they rere at last going to get a footpath. Buildings Going Up. Quite i number of new houses are going u-p in the township, t'ne ef our m ist progressive men Is going to build five workmen's cjttages. The timber is all on the ground down Elliott Street. Wish we had a few more men like Mr Bichaidson in the district. Methodist Anuiversary. Las-t Sunday being the anniversary of the Methodist Church, the Rev, E. P, Hlamires, from Pukekohe, conducted the tnree services. Collections (£4 12s) w> r ; tor the Trustee Fund. ♦ I
