AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Weekly Meeting. Those present at the weekly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council were—The Mayor (Mr Lawrie), Crs. Hamilton, Pollock, Cumrie, Berriman, Johns and Bilkey. Plumbers' Licenses. The waterworks engineer suggested that the Council should license the plumbers doing borough connection*. They would then be required to make monthly returns. Or. Hamilton: Can we license them without having by-laws ? The engineer: Yes. It is provided for by the Act. The Town Clerk was instructed to enquire into the position. Tho engineer also thought that the water by-laws should be framed without delay. The Mayor said the Council would have lo appoint a solicitor as all the by-laws would have to get under way. Or. Johns said they had three or four copies of by-laws and he thought Mr AVyett should look over them and recommend those which he thought would be suitable for this borough. They had a shooting gallery, vehicles for hire and other matters which should be brought under borough supervision. This matter is also to be again discussed. Works Committee. Cr. Hamilton said there were several matters which the Works Committee ought to have attended to but had not the time.—lt was arranged that the Committee, in company with the foreman, should inspect and decide about the firebell, the sandstone on the late Mr Roulston's property, Hindman's quarry, and consider the question of firemen's insurance. Domain Grant. Previously, correspondence in this matter was left with the Mayor who reported that he had approached Mr Webster to know what has been done in connection with getting a domain grant but that gentleman appeared to be reluctant to givo any information at all. The Town Clerk had since written to Mr Massey to ascertain the position. Town Lighting. Cr. Johns said they should decide to-night whether they were going in for electricity or gas. The Mayor find Cr. Hamilton: Oh, no. Cr. Hamilton said that all the schemes would have to be considered and it would take a month to get all the information. Crs. Hamilton, Johns and Comrie were appointed a committee to get all the information possible and to report. Allowance to Ex-Mayor. Cr. Pollock said there was ore thing they had forgotten and that was the question of payment for the work the late Mayor had done in connection with the books. He moved, That £3O be passed for this purpose. Cr. Hamilton seconded.

The Mayor: I have much pleasure in supporting it; it is the least we can do as Mr Dunn did a lot of work for the Council. The motion was carried unanimously. Width of Tyres, Cr. Bilkey introduced the question of the width of tyres. It seemed ridiculous to him that ratepayers should pay rates to allow three-ton waggons with little tyres to break the roads to pieces. The Mayor said they could do nothing until they had proper bylaws.

Cr. Berriman said they had bylaws to that effect now. Cr. Bilkey said they should appoint a special committee to go into the matter. The Mayor : Yes, that will have to be done. Borough Solicitor

Messrs Endean and Holloway were appointed Borough solicitors. The Mayor and Cr Comrie were appointed to confer with the firm and arrange terms, etc.

A Dead Horse. George Attewell wrote saying that there was a dead horse in the ditch on Costello's property; it was putrefying and polluting the drains and should be taken away. The Mayor said it was a serious matter; the horse had been lying in the drain for three weeks. Cr. Berriman: It is a case for the Police Offences Act. The Mayor answered that he had discussed the matter with the local constable who said that local authority must take action. If upon notice being given the trouble was not remedied then it was the duty of the police to act. Tho foreman was instructed to inspect and serve tho necessary notice.

Opex the Road. G. Beatty wrote asking that tho road between the properties of Beatty and Keith, which was a short cut between Paerata and Pukekohe, should be opened. There were at present several wire fences in the way. The Mayor understood there was a road there—on the map. Cr. Johns: Are we prepared to spend any money on the road ? Councillors: No, no. Tho Mayor said ho thought the road could not be got into or out of. A creek was in the way. Cr. Pollock: You can ride through. Cr. Hamilton : If a man can show there is a road there he has a right to ask that it be opened up. It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Johns, that if a deputation waitod on the Council and explained the position to the Council tho mattor would bo considered. Miscellaneous. It was decided to instal the telephone in the Town Clerk's office The Mayor: lam glad to see that wo are becoming progressive.
