LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An election to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Borough Council, caused by Cr. Lawrie's elevation "to the Mayoralty, will be hold on Tuesday, October 22. Nominations will be received up to Tuesday, October 15. The final of tho ladies' handicap match, played on Pukekoho golf links, resulted in a victory for Mrs L. J. Bayly against Mrs Wake, by 9 strokes. Tho men's final (Bockott v. Adams) has still to be played. A Congregational mooting was held in St. James' Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon to receive a deputation from the Auckland Presbytery consisting of tho Revs. Trotter, McLean and Nixon, and Mr Pilkiugton, who weie making enquiries as to tho working of the charge. Interesting short addresses were given by the Eevs. Trotter and McLoan, which were very much appreciated. There was a good attendance of members at the quarterly meeting of the Lodge Pukekoho M U., 1.0.0. F. last week. Ono now member was initiated and three others nominated. The committee that had been appointed to arrange for the annual " At Homo " reported that everything in connection therowith was proceeding satisfactorily and all the indications wore that a successful function would bo enjoyed. There was a big house at tho Masonic Hall to seo tho compelling picture "Load Kindly Light." The singing of the famous hymn by a local quartette was heartily appreciated and was accorded warm applause. This week's Star film is from a " Tale of Two Cities," which readers of Dickens will especially enjoy. Mr Coylc has rearranged tho circuit for his All Star pictures and particulars of the now night fixtures at tho various centres appear in tho advertisement.
