MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Pukekohe, October 3. (Before Mr E. Bawson, S.M.) MIUTABY TrAINIHO. Sometimes people come before the Court who are •« up against the Act" but on Thursday three defendants (W. J. Learning, 8. A. Owen and G. Howard) pleaded guilty with reasonable reasons to a breach of the Defence Act in that they failed to render personal service when called upon to do so. In one case it was sickness, in another "Her Majesty the Cow" claimed the defendant's attention to the exclusion of service to His Majesty; . the King, and in yet another the demands of a butchery busines (without which the morning chop would not be enjoyed) prevented duty to the country. Tho law demands a patriotic sacrifice of time but under the circumstances the defendants were each let off lightly with a fine of 5s and costs. Civil Casks. Several cases were disposed of by adjournment, settlement out of court and other processes. Judgment was riven for plaintiffs by default —Cooper Hud Curd v. A. H. Miller, £8; W. Boulston v. A. Crossley, £34 lis 1 Id ; 1\ Perkins and Co. v. E. W. Woods, £8 (is Id. In a judgment summons case, H. 1). Free v. AlbeK Dorricott, £2O 8s lid, judgment was givon by consent and an order mode for the paymont of 30s per month.
