MILITARY TRAINING.
At the last sitting of the Papakura- : Court, before Mr E. Eawson, S.M., J at the instance of the Defence De- f partment M. Casey was charged with 1 having failed to render personal ser- <1 vice required by him under the De- f| fence Act, 1909, to wit that he did not attend any training camp during the ' year ending May 31st, 1912—1t was '; explained that defendant had none of the "absurd conscientious scruples or -ft anything of the kind," but at thfe n time he was so busy that he could not get away.—-The S.M. said it was not only the nne but non service meant that the offender was not entitled to be enrolled as an elector, nor could he secure employment in any branch of the public service,—Sergeant-Majol Bell said that this defendant probably did not realise his responsibilities.— Fined 5s and 7s 6d costs. Three other cases were withdrawn. J. B. Crawford (of the 16th Wai* kato regiment) was similarly charged. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said he had a doctor's certificate when he left the volunteers of unfitness of health. He suffered from rheumatism and indigestion.— Sergeant-Major Bell said he had four times sent notifications to defendant to attend a medical officer ' at Clevedon. The officer gave him five or six week? to attend but defend- | ant laughed about the matter. trouble to get defendant even register. The medical certificate ferred to did not touch the present Exposition.—The S.M., who said de* % fondant did not look very ill, imposed a fine of £3 and 7 s costs. —A little 'J later defendant approached the Bench and asked what the costs were. | " Seven shillings," said the MajjfrvJ trate. Defendant in walkiug oil something inaudible. " What is that you say ?" asked the Magistrate, sharply. "I said," explained Craw- v ford, " that if it had been £7 instead w . of seven shillings I would have worked it o»t." The Magistrate checked the words that seemed to be on his lips. ; and allowed the matter to pass.
