THE WATER SUPPLY.
PROGRESS OF THE SCHEME. Statement by. Engineer.
Tho borough engiueer (Mr Chenery Suggate), reported under date June •27th. Report is condensed by us as follows: " Reservoir.— Structure practically completed, only four days' work remaining although in consequence of unsettled weather plastering had to be gone over several times. " Pipe and Trenching contract.— Two contracts still hung up awaiting completion of the roservior and consumers' signatures. " Gas l'lant and Pumps.— Erection of this machinery practically completed. Saw engine and pumps make satisfactory preliminary runs ; suction gas plant also worked well. " Power house.—Things now ready for completion of budding. Extension ok Water Mains. " The following is an approximate estimate (acting as a guide to the amount of money required.) If the Council decide to carry on the work the distances from main to consumer will havo to be chained in each case. The extensions have been arranged with the desire to supply as many consumers as possible at the least cost. I cannot consider such a system of small pipes as a really satisfactory ono but only as a means to an end, as where several houses are supplied oil' h long length of U inch or diameter thft-J'^^ nsume r Lo"draw olf a bath of water the supply to the rest will be depleted until such time as tho first consumer has finished; also it is not a fire service. So long as consumers are aware of these facts, and are prepared to abide by them, I am prepared to recommend tho system. The following j is the estimated cost of each proposed j extension : I' I.—Extension south of reservoir, due south down paddock by fence from reservoir to road opposite Bailey's, past M. Wright's gate to W Johns, past A. Wright s. Eyre s, Bailey's to W. Moore. I'm 2. Phillips to Boyd'- : J Pollock, past Mason's, Mill.-, T. Pollock, 11. Routley, J Wright, B. Douglas, J.
