POKENO.

Work is proceeding apace in connection with the " re-grading scheme " of the Kailway Department and I am advised that the ballast train will shortly start here. The dangerous crossing at the south end of the station on the Great South Eoad will soon be a thing of the past as the proposed alterations will deviate the road under the line. The prosent work has been hampered by the recent rains and progress has been slow in consequence. Our local footballers are well up in the competition for the .Raglan Championship and I trust to see them corao out "on top " for if enthusiasm counts they should win. Mr Fred Lowry has now sold a 1! of his farm, and Mr Billings likewise, to Mr J. Madill. Mr Ingram's block near the Railway Station hJs also changed hands. Several other deals are on the tapis. "To be or not to be " a Home Separator is the burning question in these parts. Honors are about easy though thj Homo Separators are gaining ground in this district. Our local representative Mr E. Lyons successfully c ompeted in the Franklin County election. His adversary, Mr S. Hunter, polled well but a block vote at Eazorback settled the matter for Mr Lyons. He should make a good choice. The Debating Club keeps mo\ ing and the last two meetings were brimful of instruction and information. Secretary W. J. Anderson is the right man in the right place. A slight case of diphtheria occurred in the district recently, but I am pleased to say that the pationt has fully recovered. Consequent on the recent bad weather our roads are in a shocking state and certainly require proper attention at an early date.
