In discussing the proposed erection of a bridge in his locality, Mr Haitley said that the engineer's price for a bridge with a concrete base and timber top was £379, but he could do it fur £l5O. He objected to throwing away £129 of ratepayers' money. The Chairman : But would you get a £2OO worse job ? Mr Allan urged that they should go in for ferro-con-crete bridges, not timber. Mrlulton said the engineer had told him that the price of bridge timber had risen so high that there would be only £5 or £lO difference between a timber-topped bridge and concrete throughout. Mr Allan moved : That Mr James, of the Public Works Department, be asked to prepare plans for a ferroconcrete bridge, 10ft wide, and that tenders be calledrfor the work. This was seconded by Mr Craig and carried. Mr Hartley : I'll stand out of it; I know what the ratepayers want as well as the engineer.
