SOUND AS A BELL.
Borough Position All Right. The position which has been disclosed about the borough appears to have caused uneasiness in some quarters. At the last meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council the Mayor took occasion to say that there was absolutely no need for anything approaching panic. Although they were somewhat embarrassed financially, the ratepayers need have no fear for the future. The amount overdrawn on the water supply account was from £3OOO to £3500. This sum would have to be raised by a loan of some sort, but it had to be remembered that when they got the water there would be a water rate, which should cover the costs and interest on £9OOO or £IO,OOO. The loan should be reproductive to that extent at least. Even if they had to raise another couple of thousand pounds to complete the roads that would not b3 a very heavy burden upon the people. There would be from some £2OOO to £3OOO extra to be borne by rates—that was if the water charges turned out well. As to the new valuation, even if values were raised by the valuer, that would make no difference to the rates that would have to be paid. His Worship concluded by saying that he had no fear at all for the future so long i s the inhabitants of the district co-operated with the Council in an endeavour to make the place a desirable one to live in.
