The Borough Council.
"We nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice. 1 '
Pukekohk has its lirst Mayor and its tii at Borough Council. It is a matter for congratulation that so many citizens were ready to offer their services to the public, and also th it the burgesses ro led up in sych laige numbers to record their votes. The regret is that place could not be found for all who off era I themselves, but we arc) sure, from what we were able to observe throughout the contest, and from the unsuccessful c indidates since, thut, the decision of the ratepayns his been loyally accepted, ami in the be 4 of spirit. Mr Dunn had the satisfaction of a rather hand one vict »ry, although in his office as Chief Magistrate he accepts duties which are bound to be onerous, and to heavily tax his time and his abilities That he will discharge his duties fearles-dv we have no doubt, and it will not be denied that he brings to the office a keen business ability an I n sterling capacity for hard work. For a comparatively unknown mau—uuknown in a public sent* —Mr Birter put up a great tight for the Mayoralty, although we believe that if he had consulted his private feeliugs he would never have engaged in the content. The came may he said of Mr who has done goo ! work on the R >ad Board, and whose x-rvic s the ritepayers will be sorrv tu los». It is difficult t) find woids t- adequately express the posi ion with regard' to Mr Webster. Everybody in Pukekolie recognises his yaiieut, and hardworking endeavour to do his full share of pub.ic serviie, and his work has been appreciated. Mr. Webster his not been a seeker after the limelight, but he has given much time to public affairs of which tho people know very little. We do not read ingratitude in Mr Webster's defeat. When new conditions arise new judgments have to be formed, and the ballot-box was ever an unrelenting taskmaster. But if the choice of the barges es ha; not fillen upon Mr Webster as Mayor, it does not follow at all that they do not fully appreciate the many good offices he has rendered iu other public capacities. Of the expiring Town Board members who stood for a seat, Mr. H. Dell was defeated. Wecannot but regard his defeat iu the light of a victory for himself. He lost many because he declined to "trim," and because he spoke when he might more profitably have remained silent. A defeat which is promo'ed by circu<nst,Hnc j 8 like these always commands our admiration. It will be generally agreed that the new Borough Council comprises good material. As Mayor, Mr Dunn has the advantage of nnd rstanding district finances and local requirements; Councillors Berriman. Fart and Johns have immediate 1 >cal body experience to guide them ; while Councillors Comrie, Liwrie, Bilkey, Hamilton and Pollock have all engaged in public activities of one kind or another and can hardly fail to render valuable service to the Borough. We wish His Worship the Mayor and'the Borough Councillors of Pukekohe successful terms of office.
