COUNTY CONFERENCE
Franklin and Manukau. i There were some fifteen representatives at the meeting of the Mannkau and Franklin County Conference, held in Auckland on Friday. Mr E. G. Allan Auckland) was in the chair. Mr J T Stembridge (Hunua) had his secretarial work well in order. Messrs W. F. Massey (M.P. for Franklin) aud F. W. Lang (M P. for Manukau) were also in attendance. The representatives present were:— Messrs W. Dunn and J. W. Johns (Pukekohe West Road Board), A. E. Hathaway (Pakuranea), J. T. Gill (Howick Township), E. D. McLennan (Papakura Road Board), J. G. Rutherford (Maungatawhiri). C. Atchinson ani Walsh (Wairoa District)f W. H. C. Glasson (Drury Road Board), S. Hodge (Papatoetoe) A. E. Mellsop and A. M. Bariiball (Waipipi), M. Markham (Opaheke), C. Hodgkinson (Waiuku), J. B. Stuart (Papakura Town Board), J. Evans (Howick Road Board), R. Higginson (Waiuku Road Board). The balance-sieet disclosed a credit of £44 12s 9d, but against this there were £32 l"s Id liabilities. Local body donations totalled £42 18s. The total receipts were something over £sl. The receipt of £Bl 6s Bd, remitted by the Department from kauri gum licenses, was welcomed. The amount is to be held in trust for the two new counties. It was reported that four local bodies had not contributed to the funds —two Laving declined, and two not having definitely replied. The new L r ><;al Government Bill was the cause e£«Jengthy discussion, after ' w bich Mr moved—" That four members (two from Manukau ■and two from Franklin) be appointed by this Conference to attend the Auckland meeting which is to appoint geven delegates to the Wellington Conference, convened by the Government to discuss the new Local Government Bill." Messrs Mellsop and Motion were appointed to represent Franklin, aud Messrs Bell and Walsh for Manukau. It was decided that the Conference remain in office until the County Councils are elected. A bonus of £lO was unanimously voted to Mr Stembridge as a slight recognition and hearty appreciation of his good work as secretary. In reply, Mr Stembridge, in thanking the Conference, said his work, ulthough laborious, was a labour of love, as he was greatly interested in local body administration. This vote, and one to the chairman, in acknowledgment of his good offices, were carried by cordial acclamation.
