The Pukekohe and Waiuku Times WEDNESDAY, 10th APRIL, 1912. "We nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice." LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Magistrate's Court report, leading articles and other matter held over. The bowlers had a good time during Eas-er. On both days Waiuku had the best of the deal, winning easily at Pukekohe. Each side won a game at Waiuku. The Pukekohe District Golf Club is getting under way. On Friday evening another meeting will be held in the Library for general business. It is understood that satisfactory arrangements can be made for links quite close to the town. Mr H. Wily, of Mauku, was the successful candidate for the vacancy on the Waikato River Board. The voting was : Henry Wily 49, H. M. Brown 26, T. E. flallett 10, E. C. Beale S. We have received another interesting letter from H. E. R. L. Wily, of Mauku, on the Waikato River Drainage question. It deals more particularly with the possible effect of the Board's operations upon the settlers at Aka Aka and Otaua. We want the people of these districts to particularly watch for this letter in our next issue. Mr W. Townson, pharmaceautical chemist, has taken over the chemist's business until lately so successfully conducted in Pukekohe by Mr T. Vangioni Mr Townson comes immediately from Gisborne in which town he was in practice for several years. Mr Townson's long experience as a chemist should prove of great value to the people of Pukekohe district.

Speaking on railway construction the Hon. Mr Myers said the department had commenced improving the grades in different parts of the Dominion, the first work put in hand being in the Auckland district. At the present time improvements were being effected at' Tuakau, Buckland and Pukekohe, which, when completed, will have fallowed up a sum of £41,000. Following the completion of these works, improvements would be made at Whangarata, estimated to cost £28,000, while further improvements would be effected at different portions of the line, Amongst our new advertisers this Week we have pleasure in mentioning the progressive Papakura firm of Stokes and Earl. These general merchants are out on an advertising campaign for business—and that's the way to get it. Mr L. Walsh, of the Buckland Coach and Smithy works, is now prepared to do all experienced work incidental to his business. Mr J. H. Keith, the well-known traction-engine proprietor, gives a reminder of the services he is ever-ready to perform. Mr W. G. Abbott, well and favorably known as mine host of Waverley hotel, reminds his Pukekohe district friends that at his hostelry country people are especially catered for. At a meeting of those ratepayers in Huntly who are opposed to the procedure of the Waikato River Board, a letter was read from Mr Wily, who stated that he and his neighbours at Ake Ake, who, like the residents in Huntly, would receive no advantage from the drainage scheme, although they had been rated, were determined to resist the action of the Board. The directors of the laupiri Coal Mines had been consulted, and it was resolved to combine together to test the case in the law courts, and failing redres« there to carry the matter to Parliament. It appeared that the payment of the first rate would be inevitable. The meeting (which was held at Mr J. Parkes' residence) resolved to support Mr Wily and the others interested in opposing the levy of any other future rate.
