Bowling Club Opening. Opening day has always been a popular function in connection with the Tirau Bowling Club, and last Wednesday, when this year’s official ceremony took place, proved no exception to the rule. A dull morning preceded a perfect afternoon, so far as the weather was concerned, so that conditions were ideal for play. The green was in good order, while there was a very representative gathering from local clubs, so much so that many of the home players had to obligingly stand down so that visitors could be given a game. The official opening ceremony was performed by the president of the club, Mr. F. Rose, who in a very brief speech welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that they would all enjoy a good afternoon’s sport. Mrs. Rose then threw the first jack, following which she played a bowl which went so close to “ kitty ” as to evoke warm applause. At the conclusion of play representatives from each of th.e clubs present congratulated the home club on its progress, testified to the popularity of the fixture and returned thanks for the afternoon’s enjoyment. Details of play are as follow: Putaruru: Taylor, Francis, King, Leggatt (s) 15. Tirau: Mouldey, Main, Little, Rose (s) 22. Te Poi: Wise, Settle, Cobham, Watson (s) 13. Coubrough, who has acted as secretary-treasurer for the past two years. The president (Mrs. W. H. Allen) presented Mrs. Coubrough with a fountain pen as a mark of appreciation. The Rev. W. T. Brabyn made eulogistic references to the recipient’s ability and thoroughness. Mrs. Coubrough briefly returned thanks. Old Time Dance. The old time dance organised by the W.D.F.U. was fairly well attended, and an enjoyable time was spent. Church Anniversary. The fifth anniversary of the Presbyterian Church was celebrated on Sunday. The Rev. A. C. Hampton (Matamata) preached an inspiring sermon to a large congregation. A strong choir led the singing- and also rendered an anthem. New Blacksmith’s Shop. Mr. F. Rose has made a start with the building of a new blacksmith’s shop to replace the one recently destroyed by fire. Rest Room. An attractive-looking ladies’ rest room has been erected near the post office by Mr. F. Rose. Farming operations. Many farmers have taken advantage of the spell of fine weather to get their hay and ensilage cut. Shearing operations are also in progress.
