THE ARAPUNI SCHEME.

MEN RECALLED.

Indications of Start on Work. An indication that it will not be long before the work of rehabilitation of Arapuni will be resumed was the fact that during the week-end 55 men who had been employed on relief work at Rotorua had-.received notice of recall to Arapuni. The men returned on Saturday and Monday, and they are engaged on the preliminary work apparently clearing the way for initiation of the scheme whereby the hydro-electric works will be restored to active function. In addition to the 55 men, it is understood that some 70 others who had more or less been intermittently employed also received notice to start work. The men are engaged at various points of the works. The men who were employed on relief works at Rotorua retained their identity as Public Works men, and they were paid for Labour Day, the relief workers not receiving the concession. A visit to Arapuni reveals greater activity than has been existent for many months past. The optimistic tone that has prevailed at Arapuni throughout the period of trouble has been increased, and overyone is hopeful that after the holidays the restoration work will be in full swing. Apparently no new men are being put on at present, for several local applicants for johs at Arapuni have been told that no work is available.
