NOTES.
An arrangement has been made by the German police authorities, the German Automobile Club and a leading petrol company whereby particulars of stolen cars will be circulated to the petrol company’s filling stations. The statue of the patron saint of Naples, St. Januarius, was recently affected by traffic vibration, and shook in such a way that many of the inhabitants believed that the saint was nodding to them and that he had a message to deliver. Frequent changing of oil in crankcases of automobiles is unnecessary, providing the machines are equipped
with oil filters. Oil does not wear out from use. The viscosity or body of the oil in the may be cut down by dilution with petrol that escapes past leaky piston rings until the oil may become too thin to lubricate properly. Besides this dilution trouble, there may be corrosion from accumulation of acid due to excessive sulphur in the petrol. Apart from the neglect of brakes, the drivers are likely to get-into bad habits, such as relying entirely on the footbrakes and never using or never testing the emergency. Then, when they are wanted, and wanted badly, the emergency brakes may be found out of order or rusted fast, so that they are useless. Another bad habit is that of using the brakes too harshly. It is bad practice to apply the brakes severely except in the case of an emergency, where a stop has to be sudden, and as sudden as possible. In coming up to a pre-intended stopping place the brakes should be applied only as a final check to stop the car exactly at the spot intended.
