Tirau.
Blacksmith’s Shop Destroyed. A fire occurred at Tirau on Friday night, when the blacksmith’s shop owned by Mr. F. Rose and occupied by Mr. A. J. Neville, was destroyed by fire. A number of implements were rescued, hut the building was totally destroyed. The insurances, which were all in the United Office, were as follows: Building £350, plant and stock £7OO, £SO on implements for repair. Tennis. The official opening of the tennis season in Tirau took place on Saturday in the presence of a large number of players and friends from all parts of the district. The courts have recently been attended to, and are in splendid condition . Rest Room Benefit. The Matamata Musical Society paid a visit to Tirau on Thursday and played “ The Gypsy Rover ” to a good house. Mr. Schofield conducted in his usual effective way and the performance went with a swing that was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The proceeds were given to the W.D.F.U. rest room funds. Mr. R. Carruth thanked the society for the help thus extended. Cricket. A cricket match was played on Saturday between the Piarere and Tirau schools, and resulted in a win for the former by an innings and four runs.
