Bowling.

PUTARURU CLUB. Opening of Season. The official opening of the Putaruru bowling and croquet sections of the combined sports club took place on Wednesday. There was a large attendance, especially of visitors and the Matamata, Okoroire, Tirau, Hamilton East and Te Awamutu clubs were represented. Before commencing play, the president, Mr. A. G. Leggatt, welcomed the visitors and expressed the sense of honour felt at having Mr. Pilkington, president of the South Auckland Bowling Centre, present to open the greens. Mr. Pilkington said that when he received the invitation he did not take long to make up his mind to accept. Putaruru was looked on as an integral part of the Centre. He trusted that the season would be a successful and enjoyable one. He called on Mrs. Leggatt to bowl the first bowl, which she did amidst applause. Mr. Pilkington and Mrs. J. Francis opened the croquet lawn. Messrs. D. G. Meredith (vice-presi-dent), C. Wy.cherly (secretary), P. Stewart and J. North, members of the South Auckland Bowling Centre executive, were also present. The ladies served afternoon tea, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent by the devotees of the two sports.
