PICTURES FOR THE SCHOOL.
COMMITTEE OBJECTS. More Essential Things Needed. Opposition to the proposals of the headmaster (Mr. R. G. Hutton) and staff to utilise the proceeds of the recent school concert for the purchase of pictures was expressed by the Putaruru School Committee at the November meeting. Mr. R. T. Smith was opposed to spending any money on pictures until better sanitary arrangements existed. Mr. A. Anderson did not think the committee had any right to say what should be done with the money. Mr. Smith questioned if the proceeds were to go towards purchasing pictures. Mr. J. Gawith said his recollection was that the teachers had got up the concert to buy pictures as the committee did not have funds available for that purpose. Mr. F. C. Flyger stated that the committee had decided on a previous occasion not to buy pictures. The committee was out to do its best for the children. He did not see why the headmaster should get money for pictures while the committee was struggling to raise funds for the swimming baths, which were more essential. Mr. Smith said some of the parents thought the idea of pictures was a foolish one. Mr. Anderson said the . headmaster’s report last month stated definitely that the purchase of pictures was to be the first objective of the concert. Mr, Gawith said it was the intention of the teachers to put the concert on again.
The discussion continued along the above lines for some time, but the matter lapsed without any. motion being moved. Mr. Smith asked that his objection be noted in the minutes.
