MATAMATA NOTES. J. Anderton, formerly of Ellerslie, is now established in the stables occupied last year by C. Carmont. The stables have been thoroughly renovated and the six acre property has been divided into small paddocks. Anderton has three two-year-olds and the chestnut mare Glittering Gold to commence work upon. Some years ago this trainer secured a number of successes for a Morrinsville sportsman with Rockfield, Penona, Right and Left, etc. His more recent horses were Smoke Concert I and Hone Heke. Some of the material in the Matamata stable give the appearance of turning out good. This is particularly so with regard to the imported Windbag—Forest Belle two-year-old and one of a like age by Lapidary. R. Mateer has a select quintette in training, three of which should be forward enough to make returns in the very near future. Standfast, which had all the bad luck of the running of the Jellicoe Handicap at the recent Pakuranga Hunt meeting, is progressing nicely, and should soon compensate for recent disappointments. An outing at Avondale for Dr. Grant’s gelding is contemplated if the weights suit. Valroe is another of Mateer’s charges which might go to the Auckland suburban course this month. Valroe had its first start for twelve months at Ellerslie last month, and went quite satisfactorily. Laptown (Lapidary Marble Town) is a three-year-old owned by the trainer which is rounding into shape nicely. Laptown is a low set filly, but when measured over is quite deceptive. Val Gene (Valkyrian—Sans Gene) and a maiden by Lapidary—Lady Swift) completes Mateer’s team. Glenstar and Quinsilia are being sent over the new hurdles on the Matamata course. The former, although he has already performed well over the battens, is not yet proficient in his take-off. The former is trained by G. Reid and Quinsilia by J. Dufty, both of whom are now using the Matamata track.
