MATAMATA RESULTS. I CONCRETE CUP. Matamata 26, Patetere 8. JUNIOR FINAL. Wardville 6, Hinuera 6. With the exception of a cold wind which blew from goal to goal, conditions were good for Saturday’s fixtures. The meeting between Patetere and Matamata in the first round of the Concrete Cup knock-out competition provided an interesting game. Both packs of forwards made the game very willing from start to finish, while the backs opened up on every opportunity. The home backs were much superior in handling and pace and quickly had the issue beyond doubt, though Patetere battled till the final whistle. The game was noteworthy for the fact that Mr. Hollis, refereeing for the first time this season, tightened up on offside play and obstruction, penalising the home side half-a-dozen times in the first three minutes, and awarding an obstruction try against them later in the game. The junior final proved a hard game between two evenly matched teams, who live to fight another day. Matamata 26, Patetere 8. The teams were:— Matamata. Fitzgerald, Kneebone, Carlson, Robertson, Mehrtens, Story, Egan, Davies, Wright, White, Ensor, Malligan, Fletcher, Short, Ford. Patetere. Shaw, Bragg, Wilson, Flutey, Stewart, Brown, Campbell, Fell, Wine, Callaghan, Amoore, Syme, Weston, Campbell, Moore. In the first minute Flutey failed at goal from a free kick. Frees against Ensor and also Wright saw Patetere in the home 25, but a drop at goal by Brown ended in a force. Further frees, this time against Robertson, Ensor and Davies, saw Stewart kick a “ poster ” from the last one. Neat play by Wilson got to the home line, where Campbell dummied, but failed to get over. From the drop-out Egan caught the blacks napping. Tipping the ball he sent Carlson away. The big fellow beat several 1 to half-scissors with Davies at the 1 opposite 25. The latter reversed to [ Robertson, who got over behind the posts. Carlson converted. Matamata 5, Patetere 0. Patetere were heeling the ball, but the home team were superior in the loose. A penalty against Kneebone for shepherding saw Wilson fail from well out. Quarter-time: Matamata 5, Patetere 0. A good run by the home backs, in which Davies covered well, let Robertson away. The winger circled Flutey in good style, but stopped at Fitzgerald. Wright sent a pass across field and Egan gathering from a loose kick ran round. Catching the defence off its balance he shot over. Carlson converted with a good kick. Matamata 10, Patetere 0. The black forwards improved and Fell got clear from a scrum. Reaching Fitzgerald, with the line open, Weston failed to take his difficult pass. Story next shone out and when stopped Egan gathered and centred. The bounce favoured Robertson, who touched down at the posts. Carlson converted. Matamata 15, Patetere 0. The forward play was willing and the referee got in early with some fatherly advice. Davies opened up to the right, but Story lost a sure try by trying to cut in. From the next scrum the ball rolled to Mehrtens. who passed to Carlson for Kneebone to get over at the flag. Carlson failed with the kick. Half-time:
Matamata 18, Patetere 0.
Davies, who had been playing as rover, changed with Story for the second spell. Shaw put Patetere on attack with a good kick. Bragg ceni tied cleverly, but Mehrtens forced. The home forwards worked back, and Egan gathering wide from the scrum sent Mehrtens away. Davies missed his pass, but Carlson snapped up the rebound to cut the defence in two and store by the posts. Carlson convened. Matamata 23, Patetere 0. From a ruck Campbell kicked and Fitzgerald mulled. Brown and Bragg followed to the line, and, Kneebone obstructing the former, the referee rightly awarded a try, though the home speed-merchant forced. Flutey’s kick from far out just failed. Patetere 3, Matamata a 3. Stewart followed through from a ruck and beating Fitzgerald ser.t to Wine, who ran unopposed to the posts. Stewart converted. Patetere 8, Matamata 23. The blacks kept Matamata defending, but could not add a further score. The last quarter opened with midfleld play till Egan snapped up well outside the 25, and, changing pace cleverly, beat four defenders to score near the flag. Fitzgerald failed at goal. Matamata 26, Patetere 8. Willing forward play followed, Campbell standing up to a lot of hard stuff. Ensor led a rush to tlie black line, but Stewart returned to the home 25. Fell dribbled to the line from the scrum, but Story saved. From the loose Stewart had a short drop, but the ball hit the underneath side of the bar. Matamata came back, but there was no further score. JUNIOR FINAL. Wardville 6, Hinuera 6. The play-off between Hinuera and Wardville, to settle the junior championship, saw a fair crowd of spectators lined 'up for the kick-off. Wardville had first use of the wind and quickly put on two tries. G. Carseldine worked the blind to get over and later his brother, J. Carseldine, also scored. Neither try was converted. Just before change over Cannell kicked a penalty goal for Hinuera. Quarter time: Wardville 6, Hinuera 3. With the wind Hinuera shor.e up better, and, following a good kick by Oates, the yellows got to the blue blue line. Here several hard scrums eventuated until McGill forced his way over for a try which was not converted. Desperate forward play fcfllowed, the blues being slightly heavier, but losing the advantage by bad packing. Cannell had an easy shot at goal from a free right in front, but failed. Half-time followed without addition to the score. Wardville 6, Hinuera 6. The opening of the second half saw Wardville in Hinuera’s territory for most of the time, but the yellow defence proved too solid. Clements was playing an outstanding game for Hinuera, and there was a lack of finish about the efforts of the blues, for whom Ford and Smith shone out. Threequarter-time: Wardville 6, Hinuera 6. For the last quarter Hinuera forwards put plenty' of life into their play and kept the blues panned to their own 25. J. Carseldine received a knock and had to go off, but was replaced. Following some tough work on the Wardville line, the blues raised the siege. The last two minutes were played on the Hinuera line without result. Time was called without addition to the score. Extra time of five minutes each way was then played, Wardville having first use- of the wind. Thei v was no score in the first spell, and in the second Cannell failed to give victory to Hinuera from a free kick in a good position. The match will be replayed, probably as a curtain-raiser to the second round of the Concrete Cup competition.
