NEGLIGENT DRIVING.

- LICENSE CANCELLED. Maori Fined £5. There was no appearance of J. ■ Hike, a Putaruru Maori, when he was called on at the Putaruru Court before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., to answer charges of negligently driving a motor car at Arapnuni and driving without lights. Thomas Brown gave evidence as to seeing the car approaching at a fast speed on the wrong side of the road. The car, which' was unlighted, crashed into a stationary car and turned over. He could not say if the stationary car was moonlight night and the store nearby where the crash occurred was well lighted. A conviction and fine of £5 was entered and the defendant’s license was cancelled for twelve months. On the second charge he was convicted _ and fined 10s with costs on both f charges. Another Maori Fined. Jp Another Maori, William McDonald, who was charged with negligently driving a motor cycle on the Arapuni road and with driving without a light, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Phillip Armstrong gave evidence that he saw a motor cycle ap- ( preaching without lights, and it collided with a “ push ” bicycle which was ,uhlighted. There were two men on the motor cycle. Gonstable Murphy stated that the V defendant admitted driving without a light. On going to the scene of the accident, witness saw where the motor cycle had been on the wrong side of the road. Tlje bicycle was L badly damaged. William McDonald, the defendant, stated that the bicycle crashed into him. He did not see the bicycle coming. He had a light on his machine, but the battery was flat. I The Magistrate, in convicting and fining McDonald £2 and costs on the first charge, said the defendant was too far over on the road. The rider of the bicycle concerned in the above collision, Jack Dehan, pleaded guilty to riding the bicycle l without a light, and was fined 10s ” and costs.
