COMPLAINT RE GROSSING.
TOWN BOARD DECIDE.
To Take No Action.
A complaint as to the nature of the crossing into his garage was made by Mr. J. M. Spear in a letter to the Putaruru Town Board. The . letter stated, inter alia: “ A heavy buru«_-i his been imposed by instisting th..L six ton crossings be put In, and a. we had no jurisdiction over the s ,e from the water-table we -a thin!, it is hajdly fair that we * shou.j he called on to pay for mistakes which are not ours. We coi£ sider the crossings so unusual as compared with that used in other towns and too dangerous, that we are prepared to pay half the cost of altering them, estimated at £lO, if the board will meet us to the same extent. The average speed at which a car approaches a service station is between 10 and 15 miles per hour, and this is. not unreasonable taking into consideration the layout of the <, average drive way. At this speed our crossings give the car such a bump that it momentarily distracts the driver’s attention from any pedestrians who may be nearby. Sev-enty-five per cent of our petrol consumers are through motorists who are not familiar with the crossings, and it is these people who mostly complain of the unusual type of crossing.” The chairman (Mr. W. Yandle) agreed that the crossing was too sharp, but he also stated that he thought the speed of 15 miles per hour was too great a speed at which to cross over a footpath. He suggested replying that the board regretted that they could take no action. Mr. C. C. Neal suggested that Mr. Spear should put a steel grating over the crossings. It was decided to embody the suggestion in the reply to Mr. Spear, W which was to be along the lines of the chairman’s remarks.
