MATAMATA v. CAMBRIDGE. Easy Win for Matamata. The Matamata and Cambridge subunion representatives met at Cambridge on Saturday and the visitors emerged from a tame game victorious by 16 points to 0. The ground was very greasy and hindered sound back play. The teams were:— Matamata.—Stewart, W. H. Carlson, G. Carlson, Fausett, Brown, Carroll, Egan, Story, Ford, Lory, Ensor, J. Carroll, Syme, Fell, Fraser. Cambridge. Thomas, Williams, Wiseman, Baker, Byrne, Hollier, Marx, McNamara, Cooper, Curie, D. Bourke, F. Shaw, Playle, McLeish, Wilson.
Mr. Webber was referee. For the first 10 minutes play was of a fairly even nature. Matamata had slightly the better of matters and relied on kicking. The Cambridge forwards ultimately broke away in a rush, and a fumble by Brown let the blue and whites right on to the Matamata line. A free to Cambridge from the loose play gave Thomas an easy chance to put Cambridge in the lead, but the ball went just outside the posts. Ensor was next responsible in a lone forward movement for taking play into the Cambridge 25. The ball went across to the opposite wing, where W. Carroll sent out to W. Carlson, but the winger was grassed. From a lineout Brown got the ball at toe and went through the defence to .score. Fausett converted. Matamata 5, Cambridge 0.
Matamata came again, and G. Carlson, who was playing his first game for Matamata, cut through the centre. Obstruction let the home forwards through but Stewart sent them back. Matamata were still making the mistake of going for length in their kicks instead of getting the line. Just before halftime Matamata scored again. In loose play Story put his foot to the ball and just beat Thomas to a try near the comer flag. ' Cambridge forwards worked down on resumption, but Stewart cleared to his 25, and W. Carroll continued on. Matamata forwards and backs participated in an attack and G. Carlson dropped over but lost the ball. Carroll had followed fast arid gathered to touch down. W. Carlson converted. Matamata 13, Cambridge 0. Play was now wholly in Matamata’s favour. Bourke and McNamara ultimately broke away but were stopped by Carroll. Williams came round the blind side and had Stewart in difficulties and a Cambridge score seemed likely until Carroll got back. Mishandling by W. Carlson let Cambridge into the Matamata 25. At this stage Matamata made mistakes galore but Cambridge had no backs capable of taking advantage of what was going. Matamata worked to the other end and a drop at goal by Stewart was resultless. G. Carlson and Wiseman had a race and went over together, but the Cambridge man gathered and forced. Matamata kept up a continual attack which ultimately added to the total. Close in the ball went from G. Carlson to W. Carroll to Fausett, who scored. The kick failed. Matamata 16, Cambridge. 0.
The game closed with a clean break through the centre by G. Carlson, but he could not outpace Wiseman, whom he had only to beat to score. The game finished with the score : Matamata 16, Cambridge 0. PEPPERILL CUP. During the weelc-end Putaruru played Lichfield for the Pepperill Cup. After a good game Putaruru won by 19 points to 17. Mr. F. McKeown was referee.
