ROTORUA EXPRESS.
TIRAU REQUEST.
For Extra Stop.
At the meeting of the Matamata County Council on Friday Messrs. Rose Bros. Ltd., Tirau, wrote urging that a protest be entered against the fact that Tirau was cut out of the stopping places for the new Rotorua express. Previously mail matter had been received at 3 p.m. and it had been possible to reply to it that night. Now this was impossible. Also, as the outward mails closed at 9 a.m. it was impossible to secure postal notes owing to the late arrival the night before and the early closing. Further, passengers had to wait a long time at either Matamata or Putaruru for connecting trains. The chairman said there was no question but that a step backward had been made. Settlers never knew when the mail was coming in by the slow trains, and sometimes mail was not received until 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. Cr. Allen said the express was speeded up to compete with through traffic to Rotorua and now passengers from Tirau had to go to Matamata and wait two hours or go to Putaruru.
Cr. Cox : They are losing passengers and playing into the hands of service cars.
The chairman stated that Mamaku had secured the express stopping simply through agitating. He moved that a strong letter be sent to the Railways Department on the matter and also that a letter be sent to Mr. Clinkard, M.P.
The suggestion was agreed to unanimously. ,
