WOMEN’S DIVISION.
FARMERS’ UNION. Proposed Matamata Branch. For some time past members of the Matamata branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union have felt that there was need for the establishment of a companion organisation in a branch of the Women’s Division. Though the matter has been mentioned on occasions at local meetings over a period of a year otr so nothing has been attempted until the past few days, when some quiet, organisation has been going on inj| the direction of getting such Sl branch definitely established. Mr. D. B. Higgins, president of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union, has interviewed many prominent ladies with the idea of receiving their support, and from these he has received a most encouraging response. It is understood that Mrs. A. H. Lambourne, of Peria, has consented to take on the preliminary work of organising a branch of the Women’s Division. Those who recall this lady’s success in organising Red Cross work and in other matters will feel that the new movement is fortunate in securing such a prominent worker to handle the somewhat difficult task entailed in establishing any new organisation. The success of the Women’s Division in’ Taumarunui, where there are over 200 members, and in districts so close at hand as Tirau and Putaruru, where the mem-/ bership of each branch is approach' ing the century mark, has undoubtedly had the effect of rousing local settlers to a realisation of the great amount of good which such an organisation can do. It is expected that the inaugural meeting will be called at an early date and officials elected.
