RADIO SERVICE.

PROGRAMME TIMES. Not Suitable to Farmers. The fact that the present radio service was not altogether suitable for country residents, was emphasised at Thursday’s meeting of the Hinuera Ratepayers’ Association, when the chairman, Mr. H. C. Pond, mentioned that many farmers had complained with regard to the programmes of the Broadcasting Company. In summer the farmer missed the news section, owing to the long aours he worked, while in winter, when he came in early, he found that all stations were on bed-time stories and children’s entertainments. Most farmers had powerful sets, capable of picking up most stations, and he felt that programmes could be varied with great benefit to list-eners-in in the country. Thus one station might broadcast news early, and another late, and so on, so that a farmer knowing the times could switch on to the particular feature he wanted. Now it did not matter which station he picked up, for they were all doing much the same kind of item at the same time. Thus, unless a farmer were indoors all the evening he missed much that he wanted to hear. He did not know I whether they were big enough to secure an alteration, but at least they could make a noise—(laughter)— and some notice might be taken of the request, which he felt was a reasonable one. (Applause). In Australia he understood the change had been brought about, with the result that one station gave news whilst another gave music and so on. He urged that the suggestion be forwarded to the Broadcasting Company. The idea was received with unanimity, and on the motion of Messrs. C. Brown and N. Griffiths, it was decided to bring the suggestion to the notice of the Broadcasting Company.
