A QUESTION OF SCENES.
(To the Editor). Sir,—When I arose on Monday morning it was with feelings of the responsibility that lay on me as an enlightened citizen that day to record my vote on the question of the proposed Town Hall. “To be or not to be,” said I. And as I was debating the matter in my mind there came into my hand a circular issued by the Putaruru Ratepayers’ Association. Now, Sir, I am a nature lover, as well as being a conscientious citizen, and I was immediately struck by the paragraph that appealed to the ratepayers not to allow “ red herrings drawn across its trail put you off the scent of a white elephant.” Can you, Sir, or any member of the association tell me the difference between the scent of a red herring and a white elephant? And is there any difference between the scent of a white elephant and the big black elephants one sees at circuses ? The latter perfume is not too attractive*, so that if the scent of a white elephant is anything similar, I do not wonder at the ratepayers turning down so emphatically anything that savoured of a white elephant.—l am, etc., NATURE LOVER.
