MATAMATA RAGES. RECORD ATTENDANCE. Drop in Tote Figures. Four Wins to Matamata. The Matamata Racing Club was again favoured with beautiful weather for its annual race meeting on Saturday. Although the issue of complimentary tickets had been curtailed the attendance was estimated a record. The track was in good order and provided firm going. Insofar as the actual meeting is concerned, it can be termed one of, if not the most successful, the club has held. Although totalisator receipts dropped the gate receipts were up considerably, whilst nominations and acceptance fees also showed an increase; so that, overall, the club’s revenue should be greater than at any previous meeting. The conduct of the meeting left nothing to be desired. The secretary, Mr. T. J. Underwood, had his arrangements perfect, and everything went smoothly. The president, Mr. J. W. Anderson, led a band of officials who carried out their respective duties capably. The whole of the races drew fields which provided for two dividends from the totalisator and in all but one race the horses got away to capital starts.
The officers were: —Patron, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P.; president, Mr. J. W. Anderson; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Johnston, C. Casey and R. J: Maisey; executive committee, Messrs. J. P. White, P. Catchpole, J. W. Tims, G. Johnston, A. J. Davis, R. J. Maisey, G. G. Bell, W. M. Crabb, E. Johnston, Sefton Banks, J. Montague, D. Montague, A. Stewart, J. Downie, F. R. Gibson, H. R. Harding, J. Anderson, J. E. West, W. Holmes, A. Totman, R. Carruth, J. W. Hedley, J. Bryce, H. J. Buckley and A. Lambourne; stewards, Messrs. G. G. Bell, W. Crabb, G. Johnson, P. Catchpole, J. W. Tims, F. Hitchcock, R. McCabe, W. C. Vincent, J. Downie, W. Casey, R. Young and J. W. Anderson; judicial committee, Messrs. J. Price, J. D. Bryce, J. Montague, J. W. Tims and M. Harrison; handicapper, Mr. F. J. MacManemin; starter, Mr. Vincent; assistant, Mr. F. Gibson; judge, Mr. G. R. Wylie; clerk of scales, Mr. B. C. Taylor; assistant, Mr. J. Corbett; clerk of course, Mr. C. G. Payze; timekeeper, Mr. M. G. Philpott; hon. vet. surgeon, Dr. W. C. Ring; hon. surgeons, Drs. J. T. Laurenson and Goodwin; secretary, Mr. T. J. Underwood. A feature of the racing was the Success of Matamata owners. No less than four winners going to them. R. H. Martin .Matamata) was the most successful trainer, with two winners and a second. One or two cases of incompetent riding were noticed, which was perhaps to be expected, owing to many of the top flight jockeys being at larger meetings. However, there were no real mishaps during the day. The totalisator receipts were £18,249, a decrease of £1495 10s on the previous year. Among those present was Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P. for Rotorua. Results were:— TIRAU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 100 sovs; 81 furlongs. 6—UNOCO, ch.g., aged, Some Boy 11.-—Matapara (Messrs. Carmont and Brown), B. Dulieu), 2 Otranto (Smith), 4 Lucess (Turner), 9 Master Armour (Syme). Page Boy was a pronounced favourite from Otranto, with Grand Arch carrying £6O less than the latter. Otranto was quickest out from a good start, and led Lucess, Grand Arch and Foxhound. Along the back
f St. Warrigal went up into second | place, with Foxhound, Grand Arch, Lucess and Page Boy next. The latter received a severe bump when improving on the outside, and across the top Otranto still led with Lucess, Unoco, Grand Arch and Page Boy in that order. Unoco made a good run up the straight and went on to win somewhat easily by two lengths from Always and Grand Arch. Then followed Otranto, Master Armour, Page Boy, Lucess, St. Warrigal, Foxhound and King Fame. The unlucky horse was Page Boy, who covered a lot of ; ground and then got knocked back when getting into a handy position. 1 HINUERA HANDICAP, of 100 sovs; six furlongs. 2 VALCUIR, br.g., 4yrs., Valkyrian—Lady Curassier, (Mr. C. From a good despatch Dainty Manners struck the ) front from the favourite. Turning out of the back stretch Welcome Boy was in the lead from Ruby Dawn, Day Guide, Dainty Manners, Miss Albyn and Valcuir. They turned for home in much the same position, but Valcuir put in a strong run to win by a half length from Caulis, with the fast finishing Wild Mint third. Then came Dainty Manners, Welcome Boy, Temperature, with the rest well back. WAHAROA HANDICAP, of 100 sovs; seven furlongs. 3—COLL, b.g., 3yrs., Lord Quex —Holywell (Mrs. M. R. Flapperette assumed command nearing the straight from Abbess, Liona, Parfait Amour, Archileen. Oscar had again met with interference, being nearly brought down. Coll came with a tremendous burst in the straight and mowed down the opposition to get up and beat Abbess by a half length, with Parfait Amour a neck away third. Then came Flapperette, Archileen and Oscar. MATAMATA HACK CUP HANDICAP, of 200 sovs; 11 miles and 15 yards. I— KING’S GUARD, b.g., aged Quin Abbey Gipsy Lass (Mr. R. There was only £26 dividing Mo- : tere and King’s Guard in the order of favouritism, the Hannon repre- 1 sentative being the popular choice. ' There was a drop of £2OO to the 1
third favourite, Unoco, which was only just a few pounds better supported than Taumai. Past the stand the first time Whakama led from the Matamata representative, The Sun, which was followed by Grand Tea, Always and Unoco. Out of the straight The Sun shot out with a commanding lead from Whakama, with Grand Tea next, Always, Nnoco, Star Comet and King’s Guard, with Motere a long way last. Running to the straight the positions changed materially, Unoco taking the lead from Day Lass, King’s Guard, Grand Tea, Whakama and Motere. King’s Guard’s condition stood to him to beat Grand Tea. Thurnus appeared to get third. Then followed Unoco, Motere (Always) and Star Comet. Although the tote turnover dropped £4OO on the first race compared with last year, at the conclusion of the cup there was only a deficiency of £146.
; PUTARURU STAKES, of 80 sovs; five furlongs (weight for age). 2—VALREINA, br.m., 3yrs., Valkyrian (Mr. W. Egan), McKinley, 8.4 1 1— GLENISON, b.m., 3yrs., Glen Albyn—Signum (Mr. J. In a punishing finish Mr. W. Egan’s horse stayed on to win by a neck. After the placed horses came Lapaway, Val Gene, Maunga King and Valoria. The others were well behind. It was an unsatisfactory race, in-so-far as a number of horses were concerned, but it recorded Matamata’s third win out of five races. OKOROIRE HANDICAP, 100 sovs; 81 furlongs. 2 RED DAY, ch.m., syrs., Day Comet —Ruby (Mr. A. Totman), Stuart, 7.12 .. .. 1 3 OSCAR, b.g., aged, Quin Abbey—Glen Hoity (Mr. H. Vincent), R. Crown Arch and Red Day were together when the field was on its feet with The Sun next and then came Oscar, Lucess and Nulli Secundus. The position as far as the leaders were concerned was unchanged along the back. Red Day, Crown Arch, Oscar and Nulli Secundus, with Lucess and 'The Sun was the order when they struck for home. Red Day lasted well to beat the Matamata owned-trained and ridden horse Oscar, with Crown Arch, from Te Aroha, in third position. Following were Lucess, Nulli Secundus and The Sun. The latter ran a sufficiently good race to suggest that he would be a class sprinter. RAILWAY HANDICAP, of 125 sovs; six furlongs. 6—ABBESS, br.m., aged, Quin Abbey—Curearua (Messrs. L. J. Hyde and C. Keleher), L. Dulieu, 8.6 1 S—WHITE RINGLET, b.m., 6yrs., Some Boy 11.—Winning Lady (Mr. P. T. From a good start Foreign Fancy, Master Latour and White Ringlet made the best of the early going. Round the back Master Latour and White Ringlet were in front, with Gleneson, Whaka King, Archileen, Vital and Rangihaka in that order. Across the top the order was maintained with the exception that Vital moved up with Ruby Dawn and Archieval handy. In the run for home White Ringlet was well in it, with Master Latour in attendance, and Glenison, Ruby Dawn, Vital and Abbess all having chances. The lat- ! ter put in a sustained effort down the straight to win by a head from White Ringlet, with Master Latour a
neck away third. Then followed. Glenison, Joy Girl, Archieval, Whaka. King and Vital. WALTON HANDICAP, of 100 sovs; seven and a quarter furlongs. 1— GRAND TEA, b.g., 4yrs., Tea Tray—Luculia (Mrs. E. The latter ran the field, and, when half the distance had been covered, was in the lead from the favourite, Grand Tea and Patere. Grand Tea responded well in the straight and won easily. Unoco also came strongly with his 9.7 to beat Patetere. Then came Parfait Amour, Komak and The Jack Jumper. The winner is a horse with possibilities. Unoco put up a great performance for a horse which had already travelled nearly 21 miles in: two previous races.
